Protecting Food Service Workers

With this virus set to impact us all, let's turn our attention to food service personnel.  These people interface at close range many many customers during the day. Add to that the majority are part timers (with no paid leave, no insurance and low pay) who can not afford to miss work.  I hope managers are emphasizing the importance of hygiene and would be nice if they are provided with some kind of mask (even if N95 isn't available).  This is on my mind because my son works at Subway.

This would be true of any worker who has much public contact.  I imagine if it gets really bad, many businesses will close.  This is going to have a major economic impact on the world.

I think this is where we face a reckoning for being one of the few developed nations with no universal healthcare system and no guaranteed sick time. Most of the developed works has one or both in place and having neither is going to be an issue in a pandemic.

I don't think you want to "go" there.  This thread will be deleted in short order.

@Alison Wonderland    Two words, Unemployment Insurance.  If a business closes, employees will be eligible.

I thought I read that the masks were for those that are sick...to keep the sick person from sneezing, coughing, etc on non sick people.

People that work at cash registers and convenience stores, maids, anyone taking care of the public is at risk. Anyone in a school also. My father in law is 85 and he's going to Florida next week, I asked him are you scared? He said I'm not going to stop living now.

[ Edited ]

Been a few years since i have had any connection with anyone serving me food. Most of what I eat is fresh fruit/popcorn(no oil)/out of a factory packed box or fresh ground natural peanut butter. Did have a cup of coffee at the ice rink Sunday, but I poured it myself.

I am pretty low risk, but hey, who knows? @patbz  Was nice of you to start this thread especially for those that pretty much exclusively are served their food while out.

Apolitical here, but our neighbors to the north, whose sport is my love, has this. Two doctor friends of mine left their home country because of it. Will leave it at that to keep this thread viable.
