I guess some people  will have to make a choice. It would be a difficult choice that's for sure. I am thankful I do not have stomach issues.

I can see that people under 60 especially would not worry about it, because their doctors will likely continue to recommend and prescribe PPIs if there is no good alternative for those patients with serious risk of more immediate disease.

OTOH, I think medical science really doesn't know "the cause" of dementia and there isn't just one cause anyway. In the past 5 years they have announced that there are links between everything from soup to nuts and dementia. Scientist are reporting anything and everything as a possible or probable cause of dementia these days - and they're doing the same thing with type 2 diabetes - suddenly all kinds of behaviors "increase the risk of developing" type 2.

I was motivated to post it because 44% is a huge number.

Re: Prevacid, Nexium and Prilosec users - read this

My allergist told me to take one of them every day.  I sound like an obscene breather sometimes when I lie down.

He said it's been found it is often indigestion.  I do know that when I take it I don't hear the deep breathing sound when I put my head on the pillow.

Like most things though, I did it for a short time and then stopped.  I don't like to take medicine.  I HAVE to take some but this falls under 'elective' so I don't.

One thing to keep in mind too.  I've read that people who have reflux (which I have) also can have tooth problems because the acid comes up and messes up the teeth.

When PPIs were newly available years ago, they were prescribed almost like steroids in a way - for as short a time as possible to get symptoms under control, and then weaned off and stopped - typically no more than 2-3 months. Then the caution disappeared somewhere along the line.

It's always good to know the information, but honestly there is something negative that comes out everyday about some drug.  It's best discussed with your doctor.

Humans were not meant to take manmade drugs.

Period.

While I 100% agree with changing one's dietary habits, I am not ready to say "the majority" could easily stop. While what/when and how much food is ingested can certainly be a factor, is it the only factor for "the majority"? I don't know that to be a factual statement for me to make.

I think PPI use caused my intestinal MRSA. I ran my theory by three of my doctors and they think I'm onto something. I have chronic sinus and allergy problems, I also was taking PPIs for years to treat reflux. After I was treated successfully for intestinal MRSA I asked my doctor to test me for nasal MRSA. The nose is the most common place for MRSA to reside. My theory was that I swallowed the junk that was in my nose, the PPIs prevented the stomach acid from killing the staph bacteria and it entered my intestines. BINGO! I tested positive for nasal MRSA and now I'm being treated for it. I stopped the PPI weeks ago. I feel that without it, my stomach acid would have been able to fight the staph bacteria. My doctors think I'm correct.

@Vivian, what are you taking for reflux now. And did you taper off the PPIs or stop cold turkey?

@Moonchilde

While I agree with some things said by the above. As a decades long Proactive Health/Fitness and Vegetarian Lifestyle, I think some are taken to unacceptable extremes for me to support.

For decades people have asked me for suggestions, many for advice,on improving their Eating and Training Programs. I have found few that want to take these things to an extreme degree. I have always tried to elicit to them the easiest and minimalistic ways to make a BIG difference in their Health and Physical and Mental Fitness related measurement and numbers.

Too strict results often ends up with more people giving up in despair. What worked for the ones that asked for my help was this. Minimize the negatives and maximize the positives. Telling some this will kill you "if"? Those types of strategy's, in my experiences, do not work.

O_o

This would be the LAST person I would ask for health/fitness advice.
