has anyone ever had a toenal avulsion? when they remove the entire nail?

I have not had the actual procedure done. However, I do have a toenail that separates from the nail bed and falls off completely every so often. In my case, the area remains sore for only a few days since there is no actual wound. After that I don't even notice unless I happen to stub that toe. Obviously I can't wear polish and it does take months for the nail to grow back. I don't know if that helps at all.

Yes, I let some podiatrist talk me into removing a left big toenail years ago. What did you want to know?

Ewwww......think I'd rather have a root canal........

@CatsyCline .... Yes, I had both big toenails totally removed back in the mid 80's. I suffered for years with painfull, infected, ingrown toenails. Just make sure your doc uses the product ( not sure what it is called ) that will kill the root so parts won't grow back. Mine did and I could not be happier.
I wouldn't take a million dollars to have them back ... and that's the truth!!!!
It may be EWWWWWW to some, but obviously they do not suffer. When yur feet hurt you hurt all over. ![]()

@Kachina624 i had a big toenail removed and the 4th toenail on my left foot. i had a bad onychomycosis. its been 3 weeks now and the big tonail is healing fine but the smaller toenail is very sensitive and sore. i have seen my doctor 2 times already and he said it isnt infected but i think it is. a lot was removed (it was 100% involved onychomycosis) there was no nail anymore.
i am so embarassed about this. it was my decison to have this done. i soak in Hibiclens, apply peroxide, apply betadine, mupiricin and gauze bandages. Dr told me to just use betadine and a bandaid. its not healing ?!? i see there is a nail growing back on my big toe. the otehr one nothing. is this overkill?
anyone? i know there are RNs on here too ! thank you

@ashleigh Dupree I don't know what onychomycosis is but I had mine removed because I continously had an ingrown toenail. He killed the nailed so it never grew back. It just looks sort of shriveled. I have otherwise nice-looking feet so I decided to heck with it and wear sandals anyway.

@Kachina624 my foot doctor sells nail polishes to wear if there is no nail. if my nails don't grow back i guess i can try them. i'm almost certain the big toe still has the root.

I've tried nail polish but it doesn't adhere to skin very well and is soon gone. I figure it's better not to draw attention to it with polish.
