Your own adrenals are suppressed even in a week or two. The reason to taper off is to allow your own glands to recover their production of cortisol. I am glad you got through it and hopefully not need prednisone again. Emma, it takes time as you are seeing to lose the weight gained and the moon face and hump on the back of the neck seems even longer. And don't get discouraged it will go away in time. If you have been on steroids for a longer period and have suppressed your glands you need to be aware that if your body is understress, say a surgery, you may well need prednisone again to supplement your cortisol until you are not under stress. It is thought to take a year off steroids to fully recover and not need the stress dosing.

Oh addiegal, I so wish I knew everything there was to know about this drug. I now have Addisons, my numbers aren't only in the toilet, the toilet flushed not long afterwards. I take bovine adrenals and have just started to get a bit of energy after many many months of taking.

Bovine adrenals?? That sounds interesting..natural right??

My mom had lupus and was on prednisone for as long as I can remember. I know it was a drug she didn't like.

Fast forward my 8 yr old DD had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic 8 days into her treatment. Urgent care wanted to give her prednisone. My concern came through loud and clear and while they gave her a steroid shot it was a different name (can't remember of the top of my head) and it was a 1 time dose as apposed to having her take the prednisone for 3 days.

Was it any better? I have no idea but the idea of putting prednisone into my daughter's body scared me.

I'm sorry all you ladies/men have to take this drug.

I was given it for poison ivy at 14..bad reaction. I have been given scripts for it but never got them filled.

I also have severe asthma and COPD. I am a registered nurse and high doses do keep me awake at night but it helps more than anything else to breathe when my situation gets really bad.

So sorry to hear of your pain. I suffer from chronic pain as well and it can be maddening. Have only taken prednisone for short periods of time and it can be very helpful. I have heard long term can be very damaging.

Could that take the place of steroids?? For Addisons??? How did you find out about this? Wonder if my friend could take them. She uses Thorne supplements too..I will ask her about this! Thanks!

I was at the vitamin cottage and the woman there told me she has many customers that take blood sugar supplements and their diabetes is under control without meds. Boy, does this sound good..I would love to get off taking insulin. I am all for natural remedies! I need to research this for myself!!

FatCat, Cortine has very good reviews, this is great! Not expensive either!

Emmiesmom, these are not adequate replacement for steroids in someone with adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal glandulars are supplements and the hormones are available in such low amounts it would not supply adequate cortisol for complete adrenal failure. There is no substitute for steroids in this instance.

Thanks addie, what a bummer! I am sure my adrenals are stressed out. It was suggested I take pantothenic acid, do you know about it?? Maybe the bovine would be ok for me..I just don't want my adrenals to crash. I have been under ALOT of stress the past years..seeing how miserable my client is, I feel I need to do something. I had the regular blood tests in May..everything was ok..I go back in November. You are the one I would ask..you are so smart about all of this!

Re: Prednisone, What is your experience?

I used to take pantothenic acid. It is too late for my adrenals but I am a believer in taking vitamins and minerals to be in better health...none of us eat as well as we should.
