two years ago, i got several uti's. never experienced the burning, but the worst part, was the almost constant pressure that i had to urinate, and there just wasn't anything there other than a drop or two, after using the bathroom every 10 minutes. horribly uncomfortable.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 wrote:@sweetee2 I didn't know burning could be absent either. Since then I've read and been told if your older it can happen. I'm 68. Drs. and a nurse told me that people in their 70s and 80s sometimes get very confused as their only symptom. An ER nurse said her Mom had one and was in her words "bat **** crazy". I guess it can be any infection with an older person. My DH got a staph infection after a major surgery. I wouldn't put my worst enemy through dealing with it. He was out of control, argumentative, just nasty. total opposite of his personality. He was on IV antibiotics for almost a month. Dr. said it was delirum from the infection.
That happened to my husband years ago when he got a raging case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. In addition to feeling lousy, as it progressed (before he went to the doctor) he started to not make sense—almost like he was drunk. By the time he got into the Critical Care Unit, the nurse told me he was standing on the bed reciting poetry! 😳🤪😂
After a couple of days of IV antibiotics, he was fine. But those few days we’re pretty scary.

My mother gets UTI's frequently, no symptoms. But, when they progress, she acts like she has dementia. As soon as antibiotics are administered, she's back to normal again.
One time her bladder infection spread to her kidneys, then her blood (septicemia), ended up in ICU very ill.
Often elderly no longer have the burning and pain they did when younger. So, UTI's can become very serious.

You can order dip stick tests (get the individually wrapped ones) from Amazon.
When you feel off test yourself. I find them to be quite accurate.

Keep AZO handy. Take two pills at onset of UTI and the symptoms will be gone within an hour or two. You will also need an antibiotic (eg: Cipro, Septra, etc) along with the AZO but at least those terrible burning sensations will be gone. A Pharmacist told me to make sure to get the antibiotic, because some women feel so good with the AZO, that they don't bother to call their doctor.
I always have a box of AZO "Maximum Strength" in the medicine chest just in case. I never need more than the initial two pills - that's how fast it works. (on me, anyway).....

@Foxxee I work in a nursing home and this is true. We keep some residents on cranberry extract pills as a preventive measure. When I feel one coming on I start the cranberry pills to head it off.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 I also found out I had a UTI when I was having tests for my hip replacenent. I had no symptoms but did have to take antibiotics.

Do not take AZO before going to the doctor because those pills interfer with the test.
I am a frequent UTI sufferer. And most of the time they come on without any warning. I've never had one that I'm aware of without the pain, pressure and burning.
Last July I got a really bad one and was put on antibiotics. About a month later I got another. It hit me at work and I was miserable so I took an AZO and made an appointment with my doctor. They could not do the dip test in the office because I had taken that AZO, therefore I had to wait until my specimen came back from the lab 3 days later before she would give me an antibiotic.
After that course, I continued to have the feeling of a UTI although a retest determined I didn't have one. I started to faithfully take 2 cranberry supplements a day and increased my water intake to 100oz a day and so far I have been fine.
