Pedometer - counting step equivalent on exercise bike

Now that winter is here, I've had to change from walking outside to the indoor exercise bike. Has anyone used a pedometer to "count steps" while riding the exercise bike? I just wondered if it would be a close equivalent to walking steps. My goal is 10,000 steps per day but not sure how that would convert to a bike or even if the pedometer would work while using the bike. Thanks!
