@pdlinda   Back when my children needed it, I think it only came in one type.  The 12 hour original seems to be the one we used.

I also had to pinch the nose, but the bleeding stopped pretty quickly.

Last year DH had a bad bloody nose..Ended up in the ER..They had to pack his nostrils..He is on blood thinners..which makes any bleeds usually last longer.

@Carmie   Thanks SO MUCH!  I ordered 3 different products different people recommended on this thread!  The thing that INFURIATES me is that I discussed this situation with my doctor about 2 yrs ago (just because I live alone and anytime I see "bleeding" I am concerned).

I think it is reasonable to assume that he would have recommended any of the very user-friendly items mentioned here indead of CORTISONE!  Why would he recommend cortisone as a line of first defense if I had a nosebleed?

As I repeat, I never used the cortisone until I put a dab in my nose last week (the tube was 2 weeks expired but I didn't care).

I never heard of any of the products mentioned on this thread today and am so very grateful that if I ever get a nose bleed I'll be able to take care of it more easily than I was able to last week! Thanks again!

I use apply gel ice packs, which seem to work after applying off and on ten or so minutes.

Dry nostrils and dry air seem to be the problem.

I insert coconut oil or Crisco into the entrance of the nostril to keep it moist.   The coconut oil is less obvious and doesn't remain in the nostril.

The Crisco just 'sits there' and is obvious.  But it is a protection against dry wind or air conditioners, heaters, etc.

So far, so good.

@ROMARY   Do you mean an ice gel pack pressed on the outside of your nose?  I was thinking I wish I had something cold to put inside where the bleeding was causing a problem.

@QVCkitty1   I'd never had one until last Fall, after the second one I went to the specialist who recommended Afrin nasal spray. After three scopes they only found one small place probably due blowing my nose hard and allergies .  The spray works immediately but don't blow your nose until it's healed and sneeze with your mouth opened.

pdLinda:   Yes, lightly press the gel ice pack on the side of the nose.

You can freeze refried beans or canned pumpkin into small sandwich sized zip lock type bags and use that for a softer gel pack against your nose.  Just keep re-freezing them and use them over and over again.

Thank you, posters, for suggesting Afrin and Cease Bleed (or whatever.  I will go back and write the name down).

I hadn't known about these two products.

I will give one of them a try.

My one nostril nose bleeds are usually caused by me pressing too hard on one side of my nose by washing my face or applying makeup.  Or very dry air indoors during the Winter.

Not very often, thank goodness.

Anyway, thank you for your suggestions !!!!

P.S.   Make sure you place a tissue or paper towel in between any ice pack or frozen diy packets (which I described) and your nose and face.

Just to prevent your skin from mild frostbite or whatever.

P.S. ........ Adding some of the benefits of coconut oil:

Antibacterial, anti fungal, anti microbial

Also helps with inflammation.

Possibly beneficial applying it into the entrance of the nostril.  Just my opinion, though..

Feel free to web search: Application of coconut oil onto the skin, etc.
