Why are you asking us?  Call them and ask them.  It's a very good question.  My guess is it's because they are using a contrast solution, i.e dye, and they don't want to risk that  you will aspirate into your lungs should you  vomit or become nauseous.

I'm asking because I want to know if this was the directive for anyone else's CT scans.

This isn't a new procedure for me.

Over the years, I've had other CT scans with dye and never was told anything of the sort.  So, perhaps the procedure has changed.   That's why I asked.

I get it but that's why you should ask the professionals who actually know.  You are booked for the procedure and the radiology would gladly answer any questions you have.

???   I never said I wasn't going to ask the professionals.

This was a new directive for a test I've had before.  I just wanted to know what others' experiences have been.

Yes, I have had both CTs and MRIs where there will be contrast given and you are required to fast for 4 hours before the test. It is not uncommon for this type of testing. Hope all goes well for you!

Re: NO FOOD BEFORE A CT SCAN?

i have CT scans, with contrast, 3 times a year. Have never been NPO. I do take a valium before hand because they are very closed and I can't even open my eyes. I agree you may want to call the place you are having the CT done and ask them.

i have CT scans, with contrast, 3 times a year. Have never been NPO. It may depend upon what part of the body will be involved. Mine are always above the neck, so food wouldn't be a factor. I agree you may want to call the place you are having the CT done and ask them.
