And here's a new thread to kill the time between the end of the draft and the start of training camps.
Rookie camps have started all around the NFL and while every team is publicly expressing glee at their new players, privately a few of the coaching staffs are already knowing their teams made a big mistake in the draft after getting a few days to work with their new players. They won't publicly admit the mistakes for a year or two, but there are staffs now that know they swung and missed and will be frantically trying to figure out ways to adjust. You're apt to see a few of the remaining free agents snatched up over the next few days/weeks as teams realize the rookies they'd counted on just won't be capable of filling the holes in a team's roster.
We're getting close to the June first cut date where a lot of higher priced vets are likely to get cut by teams that drafted a few kids who they think have a shot at replacing the vets. Expect to see some fairly familiar names suddenly pop up on the waiver wire around that date and the teams that still have cap room and a few holes to fill will be in a good position to fill those holes.
The Eagles kick off their rookie camp today and that lasts for three days and then transitions into a mini-camp for the whole team. We've invited a ton of guys in to participate in the rookie camp as a tryout. Among those invited to the rookie camp is Chris Gocong a former third round draft pick of the Eagles who we traded to Cleveland a few years back. He's coming off a torn Achilles and isn't highly sought after as a free agent, but is a competent linebacker, so if he can show that he's reasonably healthy he has a shot at getting a contract. The Eagles are getting a lot of attention from unsigned guys who know the coaching staff won't have any favorites among the existing players and they'll all get a fair shot at making the roster here. There seems to be a lot of optimism among the players, both those here and those who want to be here, about playing for Chip Kelly. A lot of times veteran players don't want to play for a college coach, but you're not hearing any of that from the guys here, or those who want to come here.
It's going to be interesting to see where Tebow ends up. I've got to think a team will sign him before the season starts. The good news is it gives ESPN something new to obsess about now that Brett Favre has retired.
