I take a magnesium supplement as prescribed by my doctor.  The side affects of a strong diurectic that I take causes severe, severe cramping.  Cramping so bad I feel like my limbs may break.  Since I have been taking the magnesium supplement I haven't much trouble with cramping.

I replace electrolytes also (because I exercise and sweat) but that's just a cup of coconut water, or coconut water with pineapple.  Vitamin D is another I take daily, as I don't get enough sun (for long enough periods of time) for it to be healthy level for me.  I have always had periods of time when my Vitamin D was low.  Vitamin D testing is a specialized test that your doc can run which I ask them to do for me periodically.

I'm taking magnesium glycinate as part of a Vitamin D3 protocol to increase my Vitamin D level to optimal since Vitamin D is so important for general health.

Truth be told, most doctors who are not also Homeopathic docs have little to no knowledge of supplements. You should do your own research, some docs have not even heard of most supplements. They would rather stuff you with RX drugs. My hubby and i are seniors and we take lots of supplements.

Thank you, @Shelbelle  So right.

Doctors typically don't know much about supplements. I know my rheumatologist doesn't.

I have taken a magnesium supplement for years to prevent night-time leg cramps without Dr. Kachina624 or my primary care physician's recommendation and it has worked great for me.

I took it when my magnesium level was low.  Magnesium is needed for the proper functioning of bones, nerves and almost every system in the body. You can Google for details.  There's magnesium in my multi vitamin and my level is normal so I don't take it now.
