I used to be a heavy smoker, but gave it up so many years ago I do not quality for a lung scan. However...  I had a heart calcium scan. Heart calcium CT scans also scan the lungs. They and other heart scans can be used to screen for lung cancer.

Medicare won't pay for heart calcium scans, so I had to pay for mine out of pocket. But it was only $175. Well worth it to look at both my heart and lungs for signs of disease.

This is something to consider if you're a former smoker and your insurance won't pay for a lung-only scan. Discuss it with your doctor. In advance of the scan I verified with my medical provider how much I would have to pay out-of-pocket for the scan.
