Everybody is different, of course, but the fact remains that "sugar is sugar." Your body treats sugar from fruit the same as sugar from a candy bar. I don't eat ANY fruit for this reason. I personally would never lose weight eating 125 grams of carbs per day. I like to keep mine really low....like 20-30 per day. What is certain, however, is that the fewer carbs you eat, the healthier you will be. It always saddens me when people don't know this.

@Goldengate8361 - My problem is I love carbs.  I have to be more strict with my diet.  Thanks.

Funny.  Someone better call China right away.

I guess a billion Chinese eating rice for generations

have been wrong all this time.

A potato is a wonderful food, it saved my ancestors in Ireland...

However I (as a diabetic) can't eat them, only a bite or two and never a whole baked potato, not even a small one.  Also know that I put nothing on them when I eat..... so, I avoid potatos. I don't know why my system will not allow me to enjoy them, maybe because the fiber content isn't as high as it should be or maybe the very large percentage of starch, but whatever it is, I can not eat them....

Medium Sized Potato

18 - 22 Percent Starch

1 Percent Fiber

2.2 Percent Protein

1 Percent Fat

Yay!  I'm happy you're giving the beautiful spud it's due props!! If you miss them...they miss you.  If you do Facebook, look for the group "McDougall Friends".  It's a closed group, but these folks (10,000+) are so, so, so knowledgable when it comes to healing oneself with a starch based diet.  They could guide you to reduce/eliminate T2 medications...I see people post every day about how their blood sugars are better managed eating a low fat, starch based diet.  And the numbers drop quickly.

As you can see from the except I took defining what happens when you eat starches...... I am exceeedingly surprised if a starch based diet did anything but raise blood sugars....   but I understand we differ greatly on this ......

Unfortunately, it's not the sugar that's the issue.  It's the fat.

The fat creates a barrier so the glucose, which is in ALL foods, can't penetrate to the cells.  With the fat sitting happy in the cells, the glucose tries & tries & tries to penetrate the cells, to no avail.  All that glucose continues flowing through the bloodstream, creating havoc...and creating a prescription need to artificially lower the blood sugars through medications.

Eliminate the fat.

Eliminate the medication.

Walter Kempner's Rice Diet.  Fed patients 2000 calories of fruit, white rice & white sugar.  Everyone lost weight, lowered BP, cholesterol & blood sugars.  Diabetic medication gone.  Extreme, controversial diet?  Yes, but it proved a point....it's not about the sugar.  It's all about the fat..the LACK of fat.

I get so confused, the more I read the worse it gets.  This started because I was looking for foods that won't aggravate my arthritis but still let me lose weight.  Dr. Weil has an antiflammatory food pyramid which is 3-4 fruits a day plus 3-5 whole grains per day.  This may help my arthritis but seems high in carbs.

Ugh!

I kind of have my own way of eating.  LOL

I do stay away from simple carbs and try to eat complex carbs.

@bri20 - Do you mind me asking what type of fiber you eat to counter the fruit carbs?

Your health profile is an individualized thing that no one can advise you on other than your physician. Once you have blood work done, speak to your physician about seeing a nutritionist. Don't listen to Internet advise unless your physician sees what you plan to do. A nutritionist can map out a dietary plan individualized for your own needs.

Good luck!

@Winkk  Since you specifically asked about low carb, that's what I answered.  I have lost weight on other diets that didn't limit my carbs.  I lost 100 pounds on Weight Watchers; however, I was never able to keep the weight off.  For me, low carb has allowed me to control the cravings which have always lead to regaining the weight.  A well balanced diet is always the most healthy, but we each have to find what works for us when we are battling weight issues.

The goal is to reduce inflammation due to arthritis.

Foods can cause inflammation.

All animal meats, dairy, cheese, eggs & processed foods & oils are all inflammatory.

A nutritionist & doctors will just recommendation whatever foods, products & medications which support their business.  Dr. Weil?  Wow...he doesn't represent his lifestyle very well....he's very, very overweight.  Doctors want returning clients, so eat their inflammatory diet & take their unhealthy drugs.

John, if I have a very active day-I add more nuts to the smoothie( a little bit of fat). You can eat as much of the other foods as you like- It might seem odd, but your taste buds will adjust and you won't have cravings. I add my nutritional yeast for B vitamins and turmeric for inflammation. Everyone's different of course, but this works for me! Enjoy your evening!
