Re: Long Term Care Insurance

[ Edited ]

My husband has it through California PERS (public employees pension), but I didn't qualify because I have diabetes 2.  At one time he had AFFLECK cancer insurance and he was able to receive some money from it as he had stage 1 colon cancer.  After collecting, he cancelled that one.

@henderson

It's AFLAC Insurance, you know, the one with the duck.

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

We have no children, we bought long term care insurance from Met Life as soon as we turned 50, and have paid for it since then. We have had some modest price increases over the years but at this point we are only each paying $35/month for $300,000 a year in coverage.I would not be without it.

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

My husband and I both have it through Mutual of Omaha. We got a lower rate, called Preferred because we have good health. I believe there are 3 levels and your rate depends on your health status. In the 5 years since we purchased it our rates have not gone up. I had a phone interview and my husband had a nurse come out to visit...weight, blood pressure and an interview. I was in my 50's and he was in his 60's then.

I understand that it is much more difficult to 'qualify' now especially for women. If you want it...the sooner the better.

My pharmicst always asks those w/LTC insurance where are you going if you need to go somewhere? Most retirement homes have a long waiting list. You should get on a list. Or at least go round and do a few interviews.

Curious as to why your pharmacist would ask you this question?

Many people brag about having this but do not realize where they are going.

Just like any insurance you hope and pray you'll never need it but if it comes a tome you do - then your grateful you have it. I buy fire and flood insurance for my home but I certainly hope & pray I never use them.

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

LTC insurance is different now than it was years ago.  A few years ago I learned there are policies that now offer a death benefit.  If you have LTCi and never use it, at your death beneficiaries will get something back.

If you're thinking of getting it or have it and are considering changing or dropping it, call around or look around and see if you can find something other than the straight old policy which pays nothing if you never use it.

Sometimes I wonder if mine is a waste (since I may never use it), but then I think about all the other insurances...house, car, health...that I also pay and may never use and I get over it.

Sometimes I think of finding one of those newer, better policies.  But I'm older now than when I got coverage and I'm sure the price will be more just because of that.

I have a better idea of "where I'm going" if I actually need to use the benefits than I'd have if I didn't have it.  Not many choices here, but at least I'll get to choose where I want to go.

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

When DH and I were offered LTC through his work years ago we jumped at the chance.  We had just been though h*ll with my Dad being in a convalescent home for two years....   his costs per month back in the 90's was $8k a month (skilled nursing) and the money ran out extremely fast so I can't imagine what it would cost today.

We're keeping ours~!!

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

We used my LTC insurance when I had  ankle surgery & each of my knee surgeries to have someone come in at first and help me get in & out of the tub. Also - they paid for the home PT so then I could use the number of visits my insurance allowed for regular PT when I was ready.
