On 4/6/2015 Q4U said:FYI, ham is salty due to the curing process and is not a naturally salty meat. There are now hams on the market that do not cure the ham in the same way they used to. They are far, far less salty and taste incredibly good. I predict that curing ham will eventually totally change. I seek out these hams and had one yesterday. We loved it... and with anything, moderation is the key.
I buy a small ham steak (costs about $2.50 ) for myself, when I occasionally eat ham. I check the sodium content and compare it with others before buying. I like to panfry it, in a little olive oil, then I eat 1/2 (and save the other half for another day) along with eggs for breakfast. To "cut" the salt, I always squirt fresh lemon juice over it. I do this with sausages and also with nitrate-free and uncured bacon, which I really enjoy in the morning. I never add salt to my food, and if it's salty then lemon juice counteracts it.
Yes, Q4U, ITA about moderation being the key.

I was just trying to remind people with coronary problems-to use caution eating lots of post-Easter ham. No one wants to be wasteful, and ham is tasty-it's very easy to have omelets with ham, sandwiches, bean soup, etc. 3 or 4 days of eating ham is enough to send some CHF patients into trouble. I don't know what happened at Terrier's Easter dinner, I wasn't there-no need for every one to get their Easter Basket in a knot. I'm not the food police, nor a personal friend of the First Lady. I posted this info as an FYI only. Go ahead and eat whatever you like!
Love your sense of humor, lacey1!!! Especially love your "off-ramp" and "Easter Basket in a knot" comments!
Lacey1, I love your sense of humor, too. And I thank you very much for the ham reminder.
YOU are a good egg!

Lacey, I think it was very kind of you to post this thread.
I had an episode of a hypertensive crisis recently. I couldn't understand what had happened but realized I had been eating salads at Panera with chicken a lot recently and had added some bacon to my diet. It caused me to look a lot more closely at what I was eating and I was amazed. The sodium in the jarred red peppers I was eating was off the charts and I did eat ham. So your reminder here today was a timely one.
Thank you, Lacey.

Michelle O - that terrible "self-appointed food police chief"? Really?
What person with "a lick of common sense" would slam Michelle and Dr. Jill Biden for what they have been doing to promote healthy eating and exercise for children? Not to mention the other work they have done to fight hunger in this country.
There are far too many parents who don't bother or don't know how to teach their children anything about healthy eating... and far too many children who go hungry. Why would anyone lambast those who are at least making an effort to alleviate this horrible problem?
ETA: OP, I didn't see your post before I submitted mine. Thanks for the reminder... not everyone thinks about what you posted. And if more children (and young people in general) were exposed to what Michelle and Jill are trying to teach, maybe there would be fewer people who need to watch their ham intake when they grow up!
Who made it political ?

I'm not a vegetarian, but I go easy on meat ..... and never eat pork.
Pork/ham needs to be fully cooked to guard against trichinosis ..... and, IMO, if you can get deathly ill from eating something not cooked properly, well, you shouldn't be eating it.
Just MY opinion, people.

Wow. Is this reaction really over the OP's comment that she is not "a personal friend of the First Lady"? Calm down.

If I may add on to the OP... please don't feed your dog the bone or a lot of fatty scraps. Bones can splinter and cause damage inside the dog, and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis. (This from my daughter who worked at a vet clinic for years and is currently attending veterinary school.)

Okay! Stop trying to make me laugh....lol Danger, danger ham alert! ER's full of "ham over dosed" patients....omg....that's too funny for words.

I bought an uncured ham for our Easter dinner - supposed to be 30% less sodium - but still tasted pretty salty. I actually prefer pork roasts and will go back to that.
Ham is much leaner than beef and the old scary tales of under cooked pork are no longer very relevant to today's products. Pork tenderloins are one of the main meats I serve. As they say - pork is the other white meat and so delicious and versatile.
