Levaquin is another drug that can cause Achilles' tendon issues.   My mother took it once; had a lot of pain in her legs and refuses to take it again.   We think the drug may have contributed to her TIA, which happened within 2 weeks of taking this medication.

They tried to give that to my daughter for a UTI - she was over 18 at the time and old enough to go to the doctor on her own.

She came in from the pharmacy with the unopened, stapled bag and I sent her right back to the doctors office to have it changed and then to the pharmacy to return it.

My mother had a very bad reaction to the Levaquin, so there was no way I was letting my daughter take it.

They reluctantly switched my daughter to Cipro - the pharmacy was kind enough to take back the original because it hadn't been opened at all - long story short, I sent my daughter back to college with the Cipro and after several days on it, she starting having heart palpitations from it (irregular heartbeat is a listed side effect) the professor had to call 911 and have her taken to the ER in the ambulance. A few weeks later my niece had the same reaction to the Cipro.

There is no way I would ever take any drug in that family of drugs...

Re: Learned something new about Cipro

Cipro comes with a black box warning of possible side effects which are more prevalent if you are over the age of sixty-five, which I was when prescribed the drug.  it also says that the tendon problems can show up months after taking the drug.  About three months after taking it for two days (I stopped and requested another drug because I was concerned with the side effects) I developed a very painful ankle and shoulder.  My doctor prescribed strong arthritis medicine - did not make the connection with Cipro since it was three months later.  The arthritis medicine did not help and I went to another doctor who made the connection and gave me cortisone shots and I had to go through physical therapy for my shoulder.  I hope everyone contacts the FDA with their concerns.

Re: Learned something new about Cipro

@lolakimono  I was just going to post this same thing.  D-Mannose can be taken daily long term as a preventive.  It is a simple sugar that adheres to the bladder wall and doesn't allow bacteria to attach.

And BTW, it doesn't weaken tendons!  Smiley Happy

SaRina.....

Thanlk you for your suggestion that I should take a probiotic. However, I have tried several (recommended by my gastroenterologist) and it appears that I am allergic to something in them--don't know if it is an additive or the "good" bacteria itself----after taking a probiotic, I get huge itchy welts on my body! Had to stop taking each one immediately--and take Benadryl, which took awhile to work.

Bottom line is that, unfortunately, I cannot take probiotics.

Interesting that it took two months for me to come down with C.Diff after taking Levaquin----also weird that I used to take it on and off over the years for bronchitis--then why suddenly did I get C.Diff this time? I will never take Levaquin again--or Cipro. Not worth the risk.

Had no idea about the side effects. Scary to say the least.

Re: Learned something new about Cipro

Maybe that explains why my legs hurt.  It is like a muscle ache not joint or bone.

I took enough Cipro last year for diverticulitis to fill a bath tub!!!

@Gracies Mom, I'm sorry you had that reaction to probiotics. Try to incorporate "good bacteria" foods into your diet like yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir. I'm sure there are more if you google.

You got C.diff. that particular time because conditions were right. Your immune system could have been compromised due to stress or any other number of factors. There is also the possibility of a cumulative effect of antibiotics that finally broke down your body's natural defenses, allowing the C.diff. to grow.

There's almost always a safer antibiotic that can be taken to avoid the terrible effects of Levaquin or Cipro. We have to research everything that is prescribed to us by our doctors, then question them. It's also a good idea to ask your pharmacist, who knows more about drugs than a physician.
