Does anyone else have a problem with their knees buckling? It happens whether I'm standing or walking. I had my right leg operated on about 15 years ago b/c of Chondromalacia and b/c my knee was out of alignment. I have Osteoarthritis also but I take Celebrex and don't have pain in my knees. Anyone else's? TIA.

I've had knee ligament issues since I was about 18 years old, and now I'm 56. My knees grew worse over the past few years and now I have mild arthritis also.

My knees did buckle on occasion. I was examined by an ortho doc and he sent me for aqua therapy. It was a miracle for my knees. I'm now completing physical therapy, in the clinic, this week.

Of course I have to keep up with my exercises. But, I've had a big improvement in my knees. I may join an athletic club, with a pool, for aquatic arthritis classes in the Spring. Right now, it's just too cold to think about swimming, lol.

Thanks for responding only shops online. I'm glad your knee buckling isn't frequent like mine. I walk on a treadmill and have to hold on in case my knees buckle. It happened 4 times today. One time I didn't hold on and went flying off the back of the treadmill. Lol. I guess I'll wait for awhile to see the Ortho Doc. b/c I recently finished chemo and I don't know yet if my Cancer is gone. I hope you continue to do well with your exercises. Sue

Sunshine, I have no medical problems, knock on wood, and am physically active, but it happens to me on occasion. Not with frequency as with you, but maybe...once every month or two.

I made a hard and fast rule for myself: Never go down a staircase with both hands full. One must always be on the railing, and fully conscious of holding on to that railing. BTW, my ankle gives in also.

I hope you find the cause! - Bird

My sister has problems going down stairs. Her one knee will buckle. She has always been overweight and her doctor has told her for years that if she doesn't get her weight down, she will eventually have a fall, or need surgery. The doctor says there is not much sense in exercising because her joints/ligaments are under too much stress from her weight-exercising would just strain the joints worse than they are. This has been a life-long struggle with her, I hate to see her in pain. It's affected her choice of jobs and vacations because she has to avoid steps.

Sunshine, I hope all is well with your cancer treatment. Been there, still dealing with after affects of chemo.

Be sure to get your hip checked. A deteriorated hip joint can cause knee problems.

I hope you do find out soon if your cancer is gone, but you should still see the doctor about your knees right away, especially if this is happening 4 times a day. Maybe there's a quick fix or maybe there's an issue that can be fixed if addressed early, but becomes problematic if you wait. You know something is wrong, so please do not wait.

Sunshine,

In early 2012 my left knee started to buckle. One day at work it buckled and I slammed into a wall at the hospital. The next time it happened I was on the way to my car in the employee parking garage and ended up slamming into a parked car, which enabled the car's alarm system. Geesh!

It took 3 knee specialists and 28 x-rays at some very interesting angles to find out that my left knee had become a "valgus" knee. This meant that though I couldn't see it looking in a mirror, my left knee was turning in: it was quite visible on one particular x-ray. My ortho doc said that I needed to get that knee replaced now or it would simply get worse and I would end up falling and probably fracturing a wrist or two and perhaps my knee cap(s). Since 65% of the work I did was in ortho, I very well understood what he was saying. At that point, I had already been walking stiff legged on that side to avoid having that knee buckle, so it was really impacting my mobility.

If I were you, I'd have a knee specialist with an excellent rep in your area take a look at your buckling issue. If you don't know who the best is, call Stryker in Kalamazoo, MI, and ask for the Stryker Navigation rep in your area. You can then speak with that rep and ask for a surgeon who uses Stryker Navigation during total knees. (They're usually really good ones. This based on my professional experience.)

Good luck.

It happens to me every once in a while. I don't have any knee problems. Hubby says it happens to him as well. It's a strange feeling isn't it?
