@SeaMaiden wrote:@KACEE1115 put Knee replacement in the search engine for the forums for many thread topics on this subject.
ALSO go to Bonesmart. org for the best community to share and ask questions. It was a lifesaver for my joint replacements.
Re "Bonesmart," due to my surgeon having made several errors during my TKA, I went onto this site, as recommended here, and was astounded at the Admins! I was immediately singled out by a panel of 3, all of whom wrote scathing notes to me, indicating that I had been blocked from the site on the first day!!! When I asked them what and how my incredibly bland question and post had done to earn such displeasure, I was told the answers were private in-house matters and that they could not, therefore, share the information with me. Checking on 2 of the admins, I found that they resided in the UK. I have never in my life been so ill treated in this medium and would NOT recommend it to anyone - ever.
(Upon review, I noted a gentleman with a long past two and a half year old knee replacement, still on this site and still whining about his surgery. He had quite a following, but was allowed to carry on. Go figure.)

Never heard of any one being in the hosptial for a week after knee replacement, it is generally a two night stay and you are sent home

She was in the hospital about a week but then they wanted her to go to inhouse physical theraphy for another 2 weeks which surprised me since the other women came home after the 5 days in the hospital.
They were all happy they had it done. It does take months of theraphy and after her stay she had pt done at her home for 3 weeks after all that. She is still going to out patient pt and trying to walk without her walker now.
It takes time and all the women were single and lived alone and were glad they had it done.

Wow! 5 days in the hospital! That would be unusual for a patient of my friend that did my wife's right TKR surgery. His patients, except for certain one's with other bone issues, it's generally 2-3 days. My wife was home in 3 days. While I do understand that living alone would be a factor, insurers, for the most part do not.
Even the in home PT is not something many of his patients can get paid by their insurers. I think those insurers figure most that have TKR probably have family and/or friends that will drive them to PT sessions. Many insurers are not friendly about this with patients or their doctors. Most are only interested in the $$$ costs.
Had my wife had her left knee TKR, she could have driven our SUV to her PT sessions. But the right knee is another story, and our car is a 5 speed manual shift, so which knee would not matter. Our doctor said had it been her left knee, he would clear her to drive after getting her progress report from her Physical Therapist. Most he said are 1-2 weeks post surgery, assuming they have an automatic transmission in their vehicle.
You didn't mention their ages or mobility factors, other than their knee, so I guess that might(?) be a factor with insurers. I wish them all well as I know it takes hard work to get these knees close to their 120°/0° flexibility returned.

One thing I wasn't told after TKR that I would be very tired. I slept a lot and wondered if I would ever not feel tired. My doctor said my body was healing and sleeping a lot was good. I lost 10lbs in 2 weeks, my husband would come and ask if i wanted to eat and I just didn't have an appetite which I found out also is normal. I did have PT 3 times at home and the second week I was approved to go for PT. I always had an afternoon appointment because I was so tired. I was able to make my own dinner when I got home but did have some frozen lean meals just in case I couldn't. They weren't necessary. By week 2 after my staples were out I felt a lot better and not so tired. One thing I did order as soon as I got home was a raised toilet seat with arms on it. Some may need one some may not. My doctor said two nights in the hospital. Surgery on a Tuesday morning and went home on a Thursday which I was ready for. I think going in with a positive attitude helps a lot too. I did and told my doctor it was a piece of cake, he smiled. Wish I could have done it years earlier. So glad I didn't have a stick shift, I had one for years and I really believe that affected my left knee a lot.

Another question, I noticed people mentioning Staples? Is that the only way they close up now? I was thinking it was some kind of special tape etc.

Hi @KACEE1115 My closure was with the glue or tape. Not sure exactly it was. I was concerned about it holding up to PT and all the bending, but Dr.said he never had a patient where the glue didn't hold. I had no problem, and kinda glad I didn't have
to go thru staple removal. ![]()

I had TLKR exactly 2 years ago , a big piece of advice , be careful not to fall . About 3 weeks after my surgery I ventured outside , we had just got a 6-8 inch snowfall . Walked in my unplowed drive with my cane , stepped on something under the snow , and my leg went out from under me . I couldn’t get up , neighbor and hubby heard me yelling and got me to the house . An MRI showed a large muscle tear , the same one they had to cut to put in the knee replacement . So back to surgery , had the whole thing reopened and it was repaired . Then I was put in a long straight Leg brace from my hip to ankle , l had to keep it immobilized for a whole month ! So there went all my PT ! That was torture , but because the muscle was repaired twice , it was very thin and needed to completely heal before I could bend it again. Now it hurts all the time , stiff , limping, it was so much better the first 3 weeks after the TKR than since. I have been back to orthopedic several times , was told l need to do the PT exercises forever ! I do them at home and it does help , but it gets old ! I want my old knee back !

after all my joint surgeries I lost weight..... got down to 112 pounds from 140 pounds
it was the pain meds... and the discomfort... loss of appetite...
I was actually too skinny for my frame at 5'9" tall...
Sadly I gained the weight back.... I really enjoyed being SKINNY if only for a year.....

My wife's surgeon uses glue to close the incision. Told me it works well, and for some, makes it less visible over time.
