Yesterday I scheduled my TLKR for november 19th.. today I am worried I will be too sick to enjoy the holidays.. need advice whether to change date to after holiday to take the bull by the horns and get it done.. would appreciate anyones advice and suggestions and helpful hints going thru knee replacement.. thank you

@pbb - I wanted to add to my other post.  Do you mind me asking how old you are and if you have any health issues.  If you have no health issues and you're not really old you should be good to go.  And, it's a quick operation, they take out the old joint and throw in the new one.  You're done.  Easy for me to say, I never had one.

@Winkk   HUH?  You have never had one and You are telling her that it is a quick operation? It is sawing. Cutting. Ripping and hammering. Very traumatic to the body...do not give advice unless you know what you are talking about!

@June222 - You are right I have not had the surgery.  I do know quite a few people that have had knee and hip replacements.  They all recouped within 4-6 weeks and were off pain meds within the first week.  Everyone has their own healing time.  I was trying to let the OP know that everything would be fine because she seems concerned.  Of course I have no personal experience I was trying to put pbb's mind at ease.

@Winkk  Best to give advice on something like this only if you speak from experience. Putting her mind at ease telling her it is one quick operation ...take out the old joint and put in the new.....Please! LOL!

@RedTop.  Paragraphs would make your post much easier to read.  As is, it's hard on the eyes.

@Winkk  That is not the way to put someone's mind at ease....especially when you say they just take out the old and put in the new.....it is not a car part! LOL!  Give advice when you know what you are talking about.

@Winkk  You do not put someone's mind at ease telling them wrong information about knee replacement. Stick to what you know.

My hubby had a TKR a year ago.  We chose to have It done before the snow and ice becomes another issue to deal with during recovery.   He wished the doctors would have encourage him to strengthen his muscles around the knee as his hamstring and other muscles became weak afterward.  You do lift your leg for a lot of things from getting in and out of car, steps or getting in and out of the bathtub.  He is doing fine now. Good luck.   PT is your friend and a,willingness to work at your recovery.

My husband has his first TKR in 2011 (age 53) and it was a nightmare (won't get into details).  He had the 2nd one done last year - a million times better.  It depends on how bad the knee has gotten. We probably waited a bit too long with the first one.  I wish you the best, though. I think women do better than men (in most everything....hehe). !!

@June222 - I'm not wrong.  Everyone heals at a different pace.  Just because it took you 8 weeks and heavy pain meds doesn't mean that applies to everyone.  I helped rehab some family members and they were off the heavy meds the first week and then just Tylenol for a few days.  They were out & about within 4-6 weeks.

You had a lot of work done and I'm sure it wasn't easy, so I hope you are feeling good now.

Re: Knee replacement

[ Edited ]

If anyone is still taking serious pain meds 8 weeks after a knee replacement something has gone very seriously wrong. 2 weeks max(and probably less than that) on narcotics and maybe a few more on NSAID should be sufficient. I don't even understand why a doctor would still be ordering you serious pain meds for that long unless you had something go wrong like an infection. After my knee surgeries when I went for my 2 week checkup the doctor said to bring my pain meds with me. He took that bottle and gave me a Rx for an NSAID. Since I can't take NSAID due to kidney disease that was the end of my pain meds except for tylenol.

My LTKR was over eight years ago and my long term results have been fantastic. That said, those first six weeks were definitely less than pleasant and I would not have enjoyed any holiday celebrations. We all heal differently, and things happen with surgery that can't be predicted. Given the choice, I wouldn't schedule this kind of surgery till after the holidays.  As far as needing pain meds, there are no hard and fast rules there either in spite of what some posters may have said. I was a veteran of several major surgeries and had never needed or wanted to take prescription meds for pain. After the knee replacement, I needed strong painkillers for much longer than two weeks. I had very aggressive physical therapy and worked hard on my exercises at home. My doctor and PT said to take the meds and work that knee a lot - that's what the meds were for. I just made sure that I gradually lengthened the time between doses so that I was taking less and less. Dr. had no problem with the length of time it took, because I was well within the expected limits. And it was definitely not 2 weeks. The poster who said that stated earlier that she had a PARTIAL knee replacement - big difference.  Today I have no pain, great flexibility, and a very normal gait. No one ever guesses that I've had a knee replacement.
