I burst the bursa sak on my right knee in Karate and I'm telling you the pain took my breath away. Initially I was on crutches, and ice to reduce swelling. Then heat and I kept it wrapped in a neophrene brace. There was nothing much they could do other than to allieviate the pain as best as possible and wait for the dang thing to heal. I remember when it happened because I put too much force in my kick (to a bag) and I accidently hyper-extended my knee.
In my case it took about a year to not have ANY pain anymore..... one of the worst injuries I've had (and I've also had 3 surgeries on my knees for other problems....)
