Kidney Cancer

Yesterday I went with dh to the doctor to find out more about his condition. The cancer take up about a third of the kidney. There is no radiation involved which means take the kidney out. We know you can live with one kidney. Has anyone had this done and are they ok now? Just don't know if I should keep my mouth shut or encourage him to go ahead with the operation.
