Is there a trick to using eye drops?

I went for a routine eye exam and the Dr. said I have the beginning of dry eyes. I had no idea. She gave me some drops for it but so far they all have ended up on my upper lids, lower lids, eyelashes, and cheek. Seems no matter what I try, they don;t make it into my eyes.

Does anyone have any good advice?  Thanks

Stand in front of a mirrow.

Pull the skin under your lower lashes out like a pouch.

Hold head back but make sure you can still look into the mirrow.

While looking in the mirrow, put the drops into the pouch.

Let the pouch go. While head is back, blink a few times.

Wipe off any excess.

Do the same for the other eye.

I also have dry eyes. I know when mine are worse because they feel like I have sand or dirt in my eyes. DH tilts his head back to put in the drops. I cannot do that. I have to lean toward the mirror so I can see what I'm doing, tilt my head to side & try to drop it in. Sometimes it goes in & sometimes if runs down my face. They do make eye drop helpers. Search eye drop helpers & click on images to see the different ones they make. One of those may help you.

Read the paper that came with the drops.  I had a prescription that needed to be put in the "pouch" made by pulling out the lower lid then don't blink for a few seconds.  I just put them in my eye.  BIG mistake!

Worth your time to read it.  It may have instructions.

That is the correct way and how medical professionals teach patients or should

I was taught to hold my head back and aim directly for the inside corner, keep head back and blink a few times to distribute the drop around the eye.

@RedTop  That's exactly how I do it too.  No mess either.  Just make sure your head is tilted back.  One drop in the inside corner of the eye, blink and Voila.  No muss, no fuss, no bother.

Re: Is there a trick to using eye drops?

I use a prescription drug that is no larger than a quarter and I was losing most of it down my face.  I figured out how to get it in my eyes without missing.  I put my head on the arm of the couch and drop the meds into the corner of my eye closest to my nose.   It will naturally run the opposite way once inside the eye.  The eye MD taught me that trick.  Works for those of us without anyone at our homes to assist us.

I do the say with Refresh for dry out except I use it all day so I just tilt my head back at work and insert into the corner of my eyes.  I hope any of these suggestions offered here help you out.

Re: Is there a trick to using eye drops?

I have dry eyes and have such problems with drops that I rarely use them.  It seems my eyes are so dry that the drops don't stick, they just roll off my eyeball.  When desperate, I lay down on my back and try the drops.
