Just got home from getting an injection of toradol (type of nsaid) in the ankle that I broke in 2022. It has healed fine and I can use it almost normally, but still the dang thing aches nearly everyday. The plates and screw are on the outside if my ankle--can feel them thru my skin and I limp a little still. So got this injection instead of steroids as I can't handle those. But dr suggested prp if this doesn't do the job. PRP is platelet rich plasma. It is taken from your own blood, put in a centrifuge, then injected. It is all done in one day. But--insurance doesn't cover it and the cost is $1100. Dr also said if the toradol doesn't work or last just a short time, that the PRP prob won't do much good either. Now steroids would do better than what I just had---but have had good results from previous toradol injections. Anyway--am trying to avoid surgery to remove the hardware--which I am thinking is in my future---just an interesting little tidbit---this dr was sooooo young too---am sure he may be 30-something---which is fine by me --I know there was a post about how young drs are these days.

I had PRP with my dental bone grafts prior to having implants put in. Helps the jaw bone take the grafts better/quicker and with less pain.

@SilleeMee I didn't have grafts, but my oral surgeon packed the screws with the PRP. di

@wagirl for what it's worth, my husband had to have plates and screws removed from his arm because of pain much like what you described. My MIL had to have the same thing done with her wrist that she had broken. Both came out of surgery with everything 100% better and no lingering pain!

I have so much "spare hardware" installed...that I set off magnetometers.

I had PRP done about six months ago to help in the repair of a partially torn tendon in my foot. I had spent many months in a walking boot prior to the PRP which, for me, was the end of the line before surgery. The PRP worked very well. Insurance didn't cover it for me either, but my doctor agreed to a much lower cash deal. His idea. I think it was $400. I recommend it.

There are so many ways to use PRP and I'm glad it's being offered more widely. I had it done when I got an dental implant and that along with PRF is being used to target signs of aging.
I hope any treatment you chose helps you. Chronic pain is such a hard thing to treat and wears you out.

@Ainhisg ---that's good to hear! Glad it was successful and I probably will do that as well. My ortho dr said it would be 2 weeks in my boot so--- really no big deal. It's just surgery---again!!!

@GenXmuse ---Didn't think to ask about a discount--for being a senior or for paying cash---good point. Yes, this is also known as stem cell too and the radio airwaves are full of ads for the drs that use it. Even webinars to sign up for. Still not a FDA sanctioned thing yet thus the reason for insurance not to pay--as if insurance co NEED a reason![]()

The injection I got yesterday for my ankle went very well---feel better I think. Was back to being very guarded while sleeping--woke up just to turn over--so am a lttle tired today----hopefully I get a few months--at least-- of some relief--I have had good luck getting toradol instead of the steroids--we will see!!
