Infected Big Toe

Many years ago, I had an ingrown big toe and went to a podiatrist. He performed surgery and totally messed up the nail. I've been in pain ever since. Yesterday I went to my general doctor and he said there's an infection under the toe bed and the nail (that's small and ugly) should be removed. Has anyone had a similar problem. Even though the nail looks terrible - I prefer that to no nail.
