I was in the hospital recently for COPD exacerbation.  I was on some type of steroid 125 mg to get my breathing back to normal or somewhat normal. I was in for 3 days.  The doctor also sent a prescription to my CVS for Prednisone 40 mg 3 days and keep tapering off.  Your appetite increases dramatically on steroids.  You are eating and don't know why. It's actually a horrible feeling to be so full.  Anyone else have this experience on steroids?  I am okay now and down to 5 mg of Prednisone which is normal for me.

Re: I feel like a stuffed pig

@Katcat1 Yep. I've had to be on prednisone twice in the last few years, the last time was some years ago and I told my doc he should give me a gift card to McDonald's as it made me so hungry. He laughed but didn't give me the gc!

Everyone I know who has taken steroids has an increased appetite. It's very common!

Now I get it....someone is sneaking steroids into my body.  Woman LOL

Sorry I couldn't resist....I'm not making fun of anyone that is taking steroids.  I apologize if my joke offends anyone.

Yes you really have to cut down on food. My neighbor didn't and got so heavy and moon faced. I kept my normal weight. I don't take Prednizone , but have COPD, so I know what your talking about.

Yes, that is one of the many side effects . I've known people who were treated for Bell's Palsy from contracting Lyme Disease  and they experienced  an exacerbated hunger while taking that type of medication.   These are life saving medications to treat various  lung diseases , but as with all medications there are side effects.

I once had a dog that was prescribed Prednisone and he got and ate a bar of soap from the bathtub.  That was very abnormal behavior for him.

The increased appetite is very common, but I also suffer from insomnia when on steroids.

@Katcat1  Oh, Yes! I hate how much I love steroids! I've been on Prednisone 3 times due to PMR, but then only for five day batteries. While on them, I ate constantly, felt like landscaping our whole property and couldn't stop giggling! I went from not being able to move to jumping up and down the stairs. My DD had to be on them occasionally as a child, due to asthma. Same reaction.

Re: I feel like a stuffed pig

I had a very sick hound dog, take Prednisone.  Then, a leather glove disappeared.  Lo and behold found some remains in his excrement, but good golly it was ****** and tuck wondering if he were were still sick, or sick because he ate the glove, or did he really eat the glove (yes).

He survived but it was scary.

@PA Mom-mom   When I was first introduced to steroids i felt wonderful -- no pain and felt like I could handle anything.  Scary huh?  Now I don't get that utopia feeling but I don't have any pain.  I hope you are doing well.
