Hurricane Diary - Destination NYC

I thought writing this might make me feel a liittle better - more "connected":

In a highrise (30 floors) in lower Manhattan, across the street from a mandatory evac zone. There was an unprecedented (in the history of NYC) complete shutdown of the mass transit (MTA) subway/bus system at noon on Saturday. That, in itself, was kind of scary. So anyone who wanted to get out after that was basically on their own.

We went to sleep early, round 10 p.m., because I knew we wouldn't be sleeping well. We had just gotten word that Con Ed would be deliberately shutting down elec at midnight as a preventive measure. 2 out of 3 elevators were shut down last nite. Been watching the news for the past 24 hours -- last time we had 24 hr coverage was 10 years ago on 9/11.

2:30 a.m. Pleasantly surprised that I had slept through to this point. Tons of rain, but nothing more. Went back to sleep.

4 a.m. - Was awakened by horrific "screaming meemies" wind - sustained -- then very short periods of quiet. The quiet feels like a blessing, but then it starts up again. We had been reassured by our manager yesterday that the double-paned windows were "hurricane proof", but I'm beginning to have my doubts. The windows are rather large picture-type windows. Supposed to stay away from the windows, but I had to glance outside. Not a car in sight - certainly no people. Lower NYC looks like a ghost town. Driving rain and can hardly see out. Tried to close my eyes again.

4:30 a.m. - No use. We're all up, news is on again. DC (cat) seems to be acting normally, but doesn't understand why his litter box is outside the bathroom and the door is locked. He doesn't know the bathtub is filled so he can't go in. (Thinking about my DS's Wheaton terrier who needs valium to get through a regular thunderstorm.) The biggest blessing so far is that the power is STILL ON! Had turned up the fridge to max before we went to sleep in anticipation of power being cut.

Hope everyone else is safe and ok. Please check in. Shutting down now.
