I have never needed or taken any type of horomones including birth control pills.

I have never had problems with menstruation or menopause.

I try to keep my body free from chemicals and drugs as much as I can.

I used to work with a women in her 70's who still got her monthly.  She was taking horomones.  No thanks.

Cancer runs in my family.  I am trying to avoid it as much as possible.

Did anyone experience what I consider to be extremely early menopause?  I stopped having a period when I was 37.  I haven't began ( or don't know if I will) with any hormone therapy.  I'm now in my fifties and still experiencing tremendous post menopausal symptoms.  This is a talk I'm planning on having with my dr this February.

@katie1859   I might be in the minority here, but I had great luck with bioidentical hormones. Due to ingredients in regular, traditional medicine HRT, I opted for the bioidenticals. It made menopause soooooo much easier.

I'm 54 and on 0.05 mg estradiol patch and 100mg prometrium (micronized progesterone) for the last 3 years.

I feel amazing on it. I no longer have hot flashes (thank goodness) or the joint pain that I was beginning to get. I'm also very concerned about osteoporosis because I have a lot of risk factors for it and estrogen is protective of your bones. Also, I just feel better and more like myself on it.

Risk wise, I feel very comfortable taking HRT because they were falsely demonized and labeled as dangerous based on a single study (The Women's Health Initiative) which is now considered to be  very flawed (not correctly performed or interpreted). Of course, there may be some tiny risks(but not nearly what was reported) as with anything. It's a risk/benefit decision.

Estrogen is supposed to be protective of many things (bones, brain, heart, joints, etc).

Which makes sense when you think about it because, it seems like we only start getting run down, breast cancer, bone loss, memory issues when we lose our estrogen at around 50  ....so that tells me estrogen is a good thing and I sure feel and function so much better on it.

So I'm a big fan of it if you can use it....

@Effie54  Nice to hear you are happy and well.

I just want to clarify I'm not on "HRT", I'm on "ERT because of ovary removal through surgery.  This makes a big difference.

@Pink123  Okay, gotcha. I know any type of hormone replacement therapy is going to be controversial. Some people need it, some are against it. It's all good and everyone should do what's best for them. I will say that the hrt helped a great deal keeping osteoporosis at a minimum. But I realize it's not for everyone.

@Ainhisg.  I was on HRT for years after a hysterectomy.   I stopped dead on the day the news came out about it possibly promoting breast cancer.  My doctor called me a couple days later and told me to quit.  She even advised against using estrogen cream on my arms to treat my thin skin.

I never missed the HRT for even 2 minutes.  Guess I didn't need it anyway.

Unless there's been new research to prove otherwise, that hasn't been publicized, I wouldn't take it.

Had my last child at 40.  My period stopped at 58. I never knew I was in menopause because there were no hot flashes or any other signs. My GYN said some women breeze through as I did.  She knew I was a runner, active, not overweight and pretty healthy so no need for HRT.   No history of any cancers in my family so...

I'm 68, still see the GYN for Pap smear every two years and she tells me still no need for me to be on hormones.  My two sisters are are two and three years younger than me had no menopausal issues.  They do not take any hormones either.
