Hiatal hernia is found in the upper part of the stomach in our diaphragm. The cause for hiatal hernia is mostly unknown. Increased pressure in your abdomen such as due to pregnancy, over weight, excessive coughing, or straining during hard bowel movements may also can act as the causes for these.Hernia surgery is required if herina grows beyond a size.Does anyone had hiatal hernia?

Things have changed. There is more than one type of hiatal hernia and there is one that often requires surgery. You should see a gastroenterologist if your symptoms are severe. There's some very good information online from some of the best medical websites.

I was recently diagnosed with one and spurs on my spine. I am on Prilosec and eat much smaller bites of food. I take one a day and if I forget for a day or two...wow...I really hurt.

Doc will keep on eye on it to see what the future brings.

Many people, (and children) have hiatal hernias, with resulting GERD. Many times, it can be successfully managed with dietary changes, weight loss and meds. Avoid eating 3 hours before bedtime, keep head of bed elevated on blocks. Avoid certain foods. Losing weight will decrease the pressure in the abdomen. Proton pump inhibitors, (protonix, etc.) are useful. As with ANY surgery, there are risks. If hiatal hernia symptoms can be managed non-surgically-that would be better. DH just went thru all this. His gastroenterologist ordered a Upper GI/ barium CT and endoscopy. Tests were uncomfortable but he is feeling MUCH better since following the above suggestions.

I have a hiatal hernia and GERD. Mine was found through a barium swallow test. I was put on pills but managed mine through watching what I eat and losing weight.
