I would never take legal action. I have never sued anyone. I was only saying there are laws regarding protocol that doctors have to take because they can’t leave a long term patient stranded. I have no intention of suing her, none at all. Only saying the law is on my side. I truly think I will find a doctor before I run out of the med, but if I can’t I’m sure I will be entitled to another scrip from her and would advise her of that, although I’m sure she knows it.
I don’t know what happened so suddenly, but anything I think would be conjecture. I am interested only in continuing treatment, not getting back at a doctor for any reason. If my words inferred I would take legal action, then I wrote it wrong because I never would. I hope I have made that clear now.

@LilacTree Sounds like you have a wise and excellent PCP. Keep that PCP! I refused to go on Prednisone and changed physicians rather than take such a dangerous med. I'm so surprised you haven't been doctoring with a Rheumatologist all of these years; especially within the past year after all the bone problems.
ETA: You need to wean off Prednisone. I have no idea how long that will take, but 30 days probably won't be nearly long enough. Get help from a Rheumatologist quickly.
Ask this knowledgeable PCP for a referral for a Rheumatologist! You need one in addition to your current PCP (who sounds like a gem). Best wishes on continued improved health.
ETA: It sounds like your insurance or the pharmacy may have questioned your long-term use of Prednisone. Don't jump to conclusions that it was your PCP's fault. She may be taking the "blame" since Prednisone IS a dangerous medication. I applaud her for helping to get you off such a med after so many years. There are so many other meds which are so much safer. Give them a try with a qualified Rheumatologist. You need a professional to help with your RA.

Yes, I have been very stubborn about “taking a cocktail of drugs,” I admit that. I am not going to be anyone’s guinea pig, ever.
May I ask if you've ever been to a rheumatologist? I have been to about eight of them and I can tell you a lot about them, both good and bad. But I can also guess you would not believe me.
Anyway, I repeat all I am interested in is getting the meds I need and know I can live with, as I have been for the last sixteen years. If I am wrong I suppose I will suffer the consequences.

@LilacTree I wouldn't worry about legally how long she has to keep you as a patient. She said she would treat you for everything else.
If you do decide to change doctors I'd make sure you talk to them ahead of time about what you're looking for. It's likely that they wont want to continue with the prednisone too. Especially if they are in the same groupl.
I think you really need to see a specialist. I know you've never wanted to take the biologics but maybe it's time to try. Not everyone gets side effects and predinsone has it's own side effects. I think your doctor has been trying to please you all these years against her better judgement. Am I remembering correctly that she tried to cut you way back years ago or something?

Doctors have the right to legally "fire" patients under some circumstances.

By the way, what hasn’t been mentioned here by anyone including me, is that anything under 10 mg of prednisone is considered a low dose.
I do not have a fat face, nor do I have a buildup of fat around the back of my neck, and I have certainly not gained weight. What most of you are talking about are those who are probably taking much larger doses than I am.
It hasn’t helped the osteoporosis which I already had prior to RD and other autoimmune diseases, as it’s genetic in my family. That has been both verified and unverified by PCPs, RA docs, and orthopods as well who have told me their different opinions about the prednisone I’ve been taking.
And no, I do not know who’s right or who’s wrong either.

yes they do but only under a certain protocol. They can have their licenses taken away if they do not follow that protocol.

No.
Also the doctors I am referring to whom I left online messages for are not in the same practice. That would be useless. The PCP I am talking about is the primary doctor in her practice. And the PCP I want to hear from is the primary doctor in his practice.

It looks like you're right @pigletsmom.
"Can a doctor refuse to prescribe a med . . .
. . . that he/she has prescribed for you many times before, simply because you have asked for a very small increase in dosage due to increasing pain? I have been taking this med (prednisone) for RA for over ten years.
This is not a government-controlled "drug.""

I am very angry, so I think I should stop posting about this.
PLEASE KNOW THAT I AM NOT ANGRY AT ANY OF YOU!!
Your concerns and opinions are very valid and I thank you for them! And I will let you know in this thread what the outcome of all of this angst is, if you choose to read it. That’s a promise.
Thank you all.
