Re: Grandchildren and Germs : )

I think it's very hard to avoid getting sick when you are around a sick kid..I have had 5 grandkids within the last 2 years..Such a blessing to me! I too, am a retired nurse..I agree that our immune systems may not be what they used to be & not as strong as when we were working..I am fortunate in that I see my grandkids, all of them, a minimum of every Sunday, (so all five are here at once) and I live a mile away from two of the babies, so I see them almost every day! When those two are sick, I just know my daughter needs the extra help and support, so I do what I can and yes, I have been sick so much more! I pray my immune system will catch up, but the alternative is to say I can't have the kids around--I think that would kill me!! So--I can sympathize with your dilemma, but I also know that you probably wouldn't have it any other way--germs and all!!!{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

You're caring for the children at your home, so where are the grandkids catching these illnesses? They come from somewhere. Kids don't just sick from nothing. The only times I had issues with my kids getting sick frequently was the short time they spent in day care. Most of the time I was a SAHM and my kids rarely ever got sick. On the other hand my mom showed up every year for the holidays sick as a dog from the people at her office that won't stay home and instead spread it around.

Kids can pick up germs anywhere there are people--trips to the mall, a playdate with a friend, a neighbor or relatives at their home.

Families are all different, and so are immune systems. Let's hope this passes soon!

Re: Grandchildren and Germs : )

I've worked in a school district for the past 29 years and rarely get sick other than a head cold about every two years. Nov. 16th we became grandparents for the first time! Our daughter and son-in-law had this four day, three night stay in Mexico planned before our daughter got pregnant. So, grandma here volunteers to take a few days off work and babysit. Our grandson had only been in daycare a few weeks and was already on his second illness, this one being a wonderful stomach virus of which was shared with grandma. I hadn't had stomach flu for YEARS, but my four month old grandson shared with grandma! My husband did not get sick in the middle of the night like I did, and was he ever a trooper taking care of this little baby for two whole days while I recouperated (felt like I was run over by a truck, too).

I hadn't had the stomach flu in years, just like you, until late last fall when I was gifted by my granddaughter. That was one intense virus. Bless your husband for stepping in and taking care of things.
