I highly recommend having your vitamin D level tested. It is essential for your bone health, but so often ignored in routine testing. One never knows.

I was told I had osteopoena over 20 years ago. The doctors wanted me on this junk. I said no.
I lift weights, have for over 35 years, Heavy ones.
I dance, both ballet and modern, and I do my own yard work and gardening. My bones are just fine.
I have spoken to more than one woman who has been talked into this stuff and their bone issues deteriorate. One woman I know who was put on it is now unable to get around without a walker and tells every woman she knows to stay away from it.
Do your research.

Yes, this is absolutely important! Back when I was first diagnosed with osteoporosis, my doc had my D level checked and I was shocked how low mine was!

@BirkiLady wrote:I took a similar tablet (one per month) for five years and it helped my bones a lot. After several falls and a couple fractures, this treatment was suggested. Like you, I wasn't sure it was a good idea. However, my Rheumatologist took a bone density at the beginning (highly recommend this) and, of course, when I stopped. One of the best and easiest meds ever! That was a good six or seven years ago and I haven't had a serious fall or bruise since. Highly recommend you try it. (If I remember correctly, it is suggested to use for only five or six years; then stop.) I continue to have bone density tests every two years.
Same here....after breaking several bones way too easy, and too many times, we did the labs. I was in Osteo Pena (sic) even though I was very young. Hereditary...short Italian.
I took Fosamax for over 6 years with no side effects at all.
I went off of it 2 years ago since I had gotten all the benefits I could by that time.
My bone scans are now up to normal. I now only have the scans every 2 years.
Best of luck to you!

@PamfromCT@SilleeMee I do have my vitamin D checked once a year and it is normal but I do take Vitamin D3 every day along with calcium. Thank you both for your reply and good advice.![]()

I have a sensitive stomach and had to go off of Fosamax after being on it for 4 months. It gave me gastritis. I do have osteoporosis but I lift weights, take Vitamin D3, and I take a good multiple vitamin designed for women over 50. My last Dexa scan shows I am at the same numbers as I was when I was diagnosed many years ago and holding my own!

I was on Fosamax (sp) several years ago because I had osteopenia, but I didn't like taking this thing every day so I just stopped.
Now I have osteoporosis and he wanted me to start taking it again, but I asked if I could take something that I don't have to take daily so he prescribed Ibandronate which I am to take once a month. So far I took it once and I am fine with it.

Daily? I take Fosamax once a week to keep my good bones in good condition. Some meds can affect bone density, so it can be a preventative measure ..... not just for trying fo regain lost density.
