DH and I try to walk daily. I wear good gym shoes (HOKA) that are suited to my feet. When it's snowy and icy I have to walk with caution and tippy toeing doesn't really doesn't help the stride or get my heart rate up. I'm looking for advice on what to wear.
Is there a type of athletic shoe with better, more secure, treads or would an actual hiking boot be a smarter option?

Personally I'd find some boots to keep the snow off your feet. I wear Khombu Carly ones. I don't like lace up because I'm out walking a lot and don't want the snow getting into the boots that way but boots would be personal preference really. And most are pretty good in snow.
For ice which can be under the snow and you don't know it I add Yaktrax. You can add them to sneakers or boots. I use the pro traction device. They have a strap that goes over the top and if you walk through deep snow it keeps them on your feet. They work surprisingly well.

Have you thought about purchasing ice grippers or ice cleats to put over your existing footware?

Ryka makes some nice hiking sneakers. They have good jagged tread. This kind of sharp-edge tread makes it bite the snow. On ice it might not be as safe however. For ice you need some kind of metal studs for traction like you find on ice-traction cleats that are removable.

We are avid walkers, averaging 7 miles per day. BUT during the winter months we only walk when the ground is dry. Cold is no problem but I will not risk falling on ice. I do have an ellipital and a treadmill that I use during those days.

I have Sorel boots for walking outside during the cold. I will never walk outside when it's icy. I won't take a chance and risk a fall. I have a treadmill and an elliptical for indoor exercise during inclement weather.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I found a pair of actual winter boots with tread that I think will work, but I'm also going to look for those covers. I think I saw them at Costco the other day.

I agree with others - I use Due North slip on cleats. I personally think they are wonderful in fact I slipped them on my boots last night.

I have fractured both of my feet within the last year and a half. Stress fracture. I am 67. My foot doctor reccomened Ecco . He said they are the best. I bought black all weather boots and they have the best traction I have ever had. They are pricey, I think 180.00. I aslo have the navy tennis shoes. They are the best shoe I have ever worn. Great support and traction.
