Finally scheduled my Knee replacement

Been putting it off, MD wanted to do the replacement last October because I was bone on bone but I decided to hold off. No more cortisone injections MD says, it's time to get it done. I had the left knee replaced in 2015, things have changed a bit. I was inpatient for 2 days then, now they keep you overnight and send you home the next day ! I will be up in a chair the evening of surgery and start PT the next morning about 6 am then discharged. I have to have someone stay with me for the first 3 days per MD orders.  I was given exercises to start now, Ice machine at home and home PT. Surgery scheduled for 9/30, keep me in your prayers please. I've been through this before but things are a bit different now.

I can't believe they're doing this manor surgery on an overnight basis.  Medicare?  Our government will do anything to its citizens to save a buck.  I'll just keep limping.

Yes, Medicare ! that's exactly what I thought. Now that I am retired, they want you in and out. I had not retired when I had the left knee done. They will send a  nurse to my home and PT which they did before. I also heard this surgery will eventually be outpatient. As a retired nurse I am seeing a lot of things done differently now.

I'm scheduled for my right knee replacement on October 9th.  I live alone and have 21 steps to get to my apartment.  I've already had both my hips replaced and had a similar time schedule as you do now with pre-op PT and hospital stay.  I'm presently going for PT 2X/week and ice my knee daily.

I've been told the knee is slightly different than the experience I had with both hips.

Like you, I know I will need in home care after my surgery.  I'm trying to decide if it would be better for me to go to a rehab facility for 5 days after release from the hospital instead of going directly home as I really don't have space in my apartment for a nurse to sleep overnight.

As I did with my hips, I am planning on having daily nursing services for 2 weeks after coming home; however, that wouldn't include the nurse staying overnight.

Do you have any thoughts about going to a rehab facility?

I send you my prayers for a successful surgical procedure and smooth recovery!

Re: Finally scheduled my Knee replacement

@Goodie2shoes  I don't think it's just Medicare. My husband had his knee replaced 5 years ago, and he just did an overnight. He won't even be eligible for Medicare until next October. I think they just want you in and out. Good luck, hope everything goes well for you.

Re: Finally scheduled my Knee replacement

@Goodie2shoes @Kachina624   In this case I don't think it is just Medicare.  For my first hip replacement years ago, I was in the hospital two weeks.  When I had the revisions done in the last few years, it was two nights each time and that is really all I needed.  It is one night now and for knee replacement you can go home the same day.  My doctor does all the latest procedures which means rapid recovery and no need to stay in the hospital for days.  If my hip replacements would have been first time for me, now it would be one night hospital stay.    It is amazing the progress that has been made.  So simple now compared to my first surgery for hip replacement.

@pdlinda

In response to your concerns about rehab, I was asked about a rehab facility but I have adult children and a great boyfriend who will be here with me so i will be ok. I sold my home 2 months ago which had many steps and moved to an apartment, no steps. Best wishes for your recovery as well

Re: Finally scheduled my Knee replacement

Hi @Goodie2shoes ,

TKR surgery has changed a lot, just over the last few years. My wife is having her right knee replaced on October 29. The Ortho doctor is a good friend of both of us, and he specializes in hip and knee repair and replacement. A Canadian, he played in my adult hockey league for many years. Needless to say it is nice to know her surgeon so well.

She went to a few PT sessions to start strengthening the muscles and connecting tissues around the knee. Also doing stretching exercises which can only make it better post surgery.

I wish you the best with your upcoming surgery and recovery.
