I do know from family going to a local ED with chest pain that they were placed in a 23 hrs observation to which Medicare part B paid, then it was found the family member required regular hospital admission because the 23 hrs observation revealed a cardiac issue that required further cardiac monitoring and care which was covered under Medicare part A. No problem with any payment for services by Medicare .
Years earlier the same family member who had private insurance who did not have Medicare at the time due to age had gone to the ED and was on 23 hrs observation which then required a regular admission after 23 hrs and their private insurance did pay minus deductible .

My husband went to the ER , he was diagnosed with pneumonia . He was admitted into the observation thing ! He had an antibiotic IV running all night . They still call it observation ! Obviously he needed the IV , how else could it be administered if he wasn't in the hospital ? Makes no sense to me !
