I guess it depends on where you live but some of the doctors in my area are snobs like that. To me elderly is around 80. But in our youth oriented society some people believe 50 is already old. Mentally I feel about 30 even though I just turned 58. My body however often feels like I'm 85.

I started college at a demanding "block plan" liberal arts school--I was 57---I graduated at 61--the best challenge I ever had. Smiley Happy) I learned Spanish, had my thesis published in the library/archives, took science classes and music ---before I did that I was a docent at our local zoo for 5 years---I never want to stop learning---I created a poetry workshop for kids and present occasionally

I am 43 and I'm always saying "I'm not old, I'm still young" and I get that look from people like "are you sure about that". When I was 32 my sister (who is 6 yrs older) told me that I was not young anymore...can you believe that?!?!

That's just plain silly! You are definitely still young . . . enjoy it, it goes fast!

The way I look at it, I am almost 56, so unless I live to 112, how in the world can I call myself middle aged ? I am way past the middle of my life. I've got no problem with being catagorized as elderly. It is what it is and there is no shame in that.

Happy Housewife: The ACA cuts reimbursement to doctors under Medicare. This is why many doctors don't take new Medicare patients and why patients see RNs. As with any worker or business, they can't afford to take customers on whom they lose money. Even Howard Dean has expressed concern about this, calling it a form of rationing. I am very much against them cutting payments to medical providers to the bone, as it will hurt patients and worsen the doctor shortage. Why doesn't Congress cut reimbursements to the doctors who treat them and their families? Hmmm?

So you don't think that your doctor makes enough money?? That he and his wife and all his kids all driving around in mercedes and living in million dollar homes is inadequate income???? someone needed to reel in the access that was on the back of the taxpayers. Trust me -i have several friends who are doctors - and NONE of them are hurting financially. I have been in their homes and been invited to things like kids graduation parties and they are not simple backyard affairs. Are they Po'ed their income is going to drop - sure - but that doesn't mean any of them are going to be hurting for money. i would not be crying for them.

I just checked at an on-line statement of what my gastroenterologist got for a recent colonoscopy. His amount for the procedure was billed at (and these nos. are approximate because I don't have them in front of me) $1400 and the amount he received from insurances (2) was $400. Excuse me, but running that thing up someone's fanny takes a bit of skill and know-how! I'll tell you who I think is overpaid....actors/actresses. How many millions do some of them make for doing what? Pretending, playing make believe, call it what you want. You want to gripe about someone making too much money, it's them.

Hi catprincess--

I just read an article today that was linked from my local news affiliate. It was about a couple who in 2013 ran across Australia. The title of the article said, Elderly Couple Runs Across Australia. When I opened the article I was surprised to read that the couple is in their early-mid 60s!! Ha! I am not of that age yet, but I would totally be offended by this kind of remark from a doc.

To me, elderly is 85+. Maybe? I keep reading great stories here and there about older people doing things I cannot imagine doing, so my perception might be off.

It doesn't matter how healthy you are, what you do, or how active you are. DO the math. You are at certain ages middle aged, and elderly. Good grief people, get over thinking you are young. You are only look foolish thinking that. Be happy and proud of every stage of life! You earned the respect and the opportunity to be active and vital, but age is what it is. You can be gay with pride, why not elderly with pride? I don't get the shame involved here. . .

I don't feel old; I'm 60. I still have a lot of youthful vigor. I'm planning on keeping it, too.

But my DH and I are realizing that we are the grandparents now, the older generation. His DM just passed away; my DM is 90.

The only time I somewhat feel old (and give away my age) is when I tell my students that I personally remember the British Invasion. Smiley Happy

It is a matter of oerspective and health... I mentioned to my SO a few days ago that we will be able to accomplish something when we are old and he replied, "but we are old"somehow I just don't see myself as old and I do't mean this in a way where I think I have to dress like a Miley swinging from a wrecking ball. I've trained for marathons and completed a triathlon a couple of years ago...I have my own vices like everyone but I was never interested in smoking/drinking and I,ve been vegetarian/vegan most of my life....also we never had children. I still work at my profession @60 hours a week and we have harries and I ride my own. Maybe these ha bits have kept me from feeling aged, but I think I would have to be in my 90s before I'm thinking O LD, but the reality is others could perceive me as an active elderly woman,,,,no matter,I love life and learning. Oh I also recently completed a graduate degree that was probably a first for my age group. The difference in perspective for me at my age is that now my priority is to be of service to others rather than concern for myself. So love whatever age you are and enjoy the wisdom that comes with age!
