I have a lingering cold and heard about elderberry syrup. It is supposed to be good for the immune system. I took one dose today and another before bed. Has anyone tried it and what did you think about it?

@chessylady I used to get a lot of colds that led to bronchitis . I take a shot of it daily and haven't had a cold in over 10 years. I don't know if it would help after getting a cold though but a boost to the immune system might. Before that at the first signs of a cold I would take zinc or use the zinc nasal swabs and would never get a full blown cold.

I mix some in a small glass of pomegranate juice daily -- I call this my "magic elixir." Lots of antioxidants in the combo and I feel good.

I swear by this. I always have this on hand along with other homeopathic medicines.

I've taken it for months....it helps lessen the duration of a cold and keeps your immune system in check. Its not a wonder drug, but another aid in fighting the cold and flu. Make sure yours is pure elderberry syrup and not loaded with sugar like those found in CVS and Walgreens. I get mine from a naturopath.

I need to find some. I take bee pollen every day for immunity help.

I was taking Sambucol Cold and Flu relief which is black elderberry. This was last year when I started to get cold symptoms and wanted to stave off the cold. I started to have some stomach issues. When I started to read about it, I found that it can have a laxative effect. I had to quit taking it.

I had the same problem with the syrup, so I switched to the softgels, and I'm thinking that I'm not having as much of a problem with that form of the elderberries.
Berries tend to do that to me anyway, no matter what type of berry they are.
It's an unfortunate side-effect of having them, and I happen to love them.

My husband and I use black elderberry softgels instead of the syrup. It's just another way of getting the elderberries.
They do seem to lessen cold symptoms for us, and to also lessen the duration of a cold, too.
We'll also take them as a preventative when we've been around others who have been sick during cold and flu season.
