I have dry eyes too. My ophthalmologist told me to use Thera Tears. They have drops or gels you can buy at the drug store. No Visine or Murine or any other drop for red eyes. He also suggested I press a warm wash cloth to my eye lids (gently) twice a day and take fish oil capsules. The drops have really helped and the warm wash cloth is soothing as well. I was already taking the fish oil as recommended by my family doctor.

I prefer a gel and have used both Muro 128 and Soothe ointments for about 35 years. I use them about twice a night and sometimes during the day.

That is what my eye Dr put me on years ago--Thera tears. Told me to not use any other drops. I had the plugs put in twice, and both times they came out within 24 hrs. My Dr. put me on Lutein. After being on that for two years, I no longer need anything. I have a lot of allergies and when I take Benedryl or anything like it, that dries them out. Try 20 mg of lutein, it really helped me. If you use any kind of anti histamine's, use the thera tears while on them. Good Luck!

@millieshops wrote:@SilleeMee Yours is the only treatment I've never heard of or tried. My eyes are painfully dry in spite of plugs, washes, heat treatment, OTC tears of all kinds, Restasis, and fish oil capsules. I just made an appointment with my doctor and will investigate your experience with him. Thanks for your info.
Google the "LipiFlow" procedure and opthalmologists who do it.
You can also have your punctums sealed; had that done years ago and it's helped.
I have chronic super-dry eyes, and though I do natural supplements and gel drops, I hope to be able to afford LipiFlow someday.
HTH and good luck.

When my eyes get dry - mostly from sleeping with a fan on - I use the Refreshe eyedrops in the morning. I get them at Costco. I tried GenTeal but I didn't like the gel.
In summer my eyes used to get really dry but since I've been taking vitamins this doesn't seem to happen much anymore.

My retina specialist told me to never use the gel. Maybe because of the Macular Degeneration - I don't know......

I get 10 mg in my supplements already. I will see about supplementing with another 10 mg.

I have humidifiers, drink a ton of water, fish oil 2X a day and Restasis 2X a day.
I may look into @SilleeMee 's recommendation as well.

I have heard flax seeds are helpful. They are also beneficial for your overall health without the issues of fish oil. Nutritionfacts (dot) org has a lot of information on flax seeds and fish oil. There is also a video on that website that talks specifically about Dry Eye Disease and various recommendations.
Hope this is helpful in some way.

I just got in from seeing my eye doctor...had cataract surgrey on both eyes this month. Anyway, my dry eye zoomed out of control after the first surgery. They put me on a new prescription called Xiidra. It takes 6-8 weeks for it to work. So....I've been on Systane artificial tears in conjunction with the Xiidra . Systane did absolutely nothing. I picked up Blink Tears (for no reason other than I had a coupon!) What relief! I had to mention where you said your doctor only uses them. Keeping fingers crossed that the Xiidra will eventually work.
