There have been news articles linking the two, but according to my Dr., at least at the time of the news articles that reported on it, there was no cause/effect correlation. At the time he was surprised that I was the only patient of his to bring it up.

After 2 choking incidents and being scoped as well as ballooned, the surgeon doing the procedure suggested that I stay on the PPI.  Currently, there is no indicadtion of osteoporosis.  But, I also exercise which is also important for bone health.

FDA dot gov has this publication regarding PPIs. Google search:

"FDA Drug Safety Communication: Possible increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine with the use of proton pump inhibitors"

I've been on Omeprazole for many years. My gastroenterologist told me about this risk years ago.  I get blood tests regularly to check for liver and kidney issues.  He also refers me for a DEXA scan once every two years.  So far no issue, but it is an absolute risk.

They are called Proton Pump Inhibitors, FDA does warn that the use of PPI's can cause a reduction in the absorption of calcium and can increase the risk of breaking hip, wrist and spine.

@I am still oxox  I think there is an issue with the language being used.  I think the literature is careful, and it does not state that ppi CAUSES osteosporosis.  But studies have shown there is a correlation [meaning they happen together] between prolonged PPI use and an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.  I am taking one myself, and was surprised that my insurance denied me a 90 day refill after my initial 90 day prescription ran out.  So my insurance company sees the risk.  One has to make decisions considering the risks and the benefits.  I was able to get an override and fill the prescription, but I think I will try to pass on requesting another override.  There are apparently other things one can take.  I used to take pepcid, but lately, that has not been sufficient.

My doctor told me in the past that taking 2 pepcid, even if it's every day, should be safe.  So I saved them for going to bed, because reflux is often a problem when laying down.

But lately my acid has been out of control even during the day and I started the ppi.  Too much stress for me, causes the acid problem.  I will try more meditation.  And prayer.

I went through the same thing with Pepcid.  I have now been taking the generic Kirkland brand Omeprazole from Costco.  It works so much better than the Pepcid did for me.  Plus, the 42 tablet box is approx $14 and sometimes on sale.  I take 2 in the morning to equal the same my prescription did and I'll take 1 or 2 at night if needed (ie ate tomato sauce or something else acidic).  You might want to try that.
