Bamboo extract contains a lot of silica (about 70%). Silica (aka silicon) is a major component of collagen where it is incorporated into the collagen bonds withing bone matrix. Bones are mostly made of collagen and so silica supps can help strengthen the collagen within our bones. Without silica our bones would not exist nor would anything containing collagen in the body exist which is almost everything.

Silicon: A Review of Its Potential Role in the Prevention and Treatment of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

@SilleeMee You also mentioned silicon dioxide that is available on Amazon, the big bag.  Do you take this concurrently with the bamboo?

I bought the silicon dioxide taking 1/4tsp a day mixed in with my bone broth.  Asked my doc about it he said he never heard of it and that he'd see me in a year for another bone scan.  Didn't surprise me he wasn't aware.

Doing whatever I can to avoid taking Fosamax which he prescribed.  I remember you had good results with the silicon dioxide, has that changed as you are going to take the Evenity?

@rockygems123

I'm currently taking just the silicon dioxide. That one is 100% pure silica whereas the bamboo silica is 70% silica content with the other 30% bamboo plant material.

Anyone take HRT to prevent osteoporosis?  I know it is not for everyone for all kinds of medical reasons.  I had my 1st dexa age 50 and have osteopenia and have stayed in this same range....so far.  I didn't have one this yr but the last 2 were showing no changes.  I was on hormones a few yrs prior to menopause and then at 51 went on HRT ever since.

I am 70, my DEXA scans have been in the osteopenia range for 20 years, I take no hormones, and never would, not even the creams. I take calcium, D3, magnesium and K2 daily.  My doctor and I are both satisfied.

@tsavorite Yes, bioidentical HT did improve my bone density.

I was  first dx with osteopenia at about age 56ish. I had used conventional HRT for a couple of years and stopped. At that time there was panic about premarin and the traditional HT

I was immediately rx fosamax. Not happy with this plan, I consulted a private pay endocrinologist that had what she called an antiaging practice. She Rxed the bioidenticals. She told me that I may or may not decide to be her patient but just remember "do not ever let anyone Rx you bisphosphonates"

After about 18 months, my scan showed a significant improvement. When I explained to the PCP what I had been doing , she stormed out of the room and said well just do what you wish.

I took the bioidenticals for about 4 years maybe from age 58-62. The doc did not accept patient over age 65 (even private pay). I never got anyother doc to even entertain a conversation about my options.

Revisiting this thread since I see it's been refreshed -

I also began taking the bamboo extract, I used the Bulk Supplements brand from Amazon.  I had osteopenia that had crossed over to osteoporosis.

I was taking the bamboo for about a year before my next DEXA and it went from -porosis back to -penia.  It's still close to the borderline but I was very happy at the improvement.  I'll be getting another DEXA next year and am hopeful.  The bamboo was the only thing that changed.  I was already taking all the vitamins, etc.

Another thank you to @SilleeMee

I have osteoporosis and have Dex scans every 3 years.

I don't even get undressed, just lay on an x-ray table clothed, a foam wedge under your knees (propping the knees up), takes no more than 20-30 minutes, and I'm done and out.

My osteo is in my spine and hip also, I use Prolia.

How many Prolia injections have you had?  I've had 8, and my FL doc said I would be done after the 10th injection. Moved back to OH and my Cleveland Clinic doc says I'll need to stay on Prolia the rest of my life. That I do not like.

I don't understand such brief DEXA scans some of you have had.  Mine are always both hips and lumbar spine... machine dedicated to these scans.

It's at the Breast Care Clinic section of the hospital.  I thought everyone had the same type scans....confused. Cat Frustrated

@kindred cats

Yes, exactly. The scanning goes quickly. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes.
