Anytime I had fluid, the doctor could see the level through the membrane.  Just means that it could not drain out the throat for some reason, usually congestion.  If it gets worse it can be painful, so I would follow the plan you were given.

IMO you should follow your doc's advice. The only negative for me the couple of times I had to take prednisone was that it made me verrrry hungry! I joked with my doc that if he had to prescribe it again that he'd have to also give me a gift card to McDonald's as I craved it when taking that med. We both had a laugh.

I've been experiencing crackling in my ear.  I went to the Urgent Care last night and the doctor said it was fluid in my ear and prescribed a nasal spray and Prednisone.  That seems like overkill to me.   I'm going to check out some "old wives"  solutions.  Anyone have any advice?

Yes do what the Doctor said. Several years ago I had fluid and was  prescribed Prednisone and the problem was solved. If not these things only get worse.

I've been in the health care business of providing direct patent care for  abt 40 yrs  .  My experience is that some medical professionals  may not be correct in their diagnosis . Even health care professionals encourage patients to seek  a 2nd opinion  from specialists  and esp if surgery is recomended

@seaswirl  DH and i both have ear wax issues. I also get a lot of water in my ears when I shower. I found this little scoops when I was looking for some solutions.Trust me,we have put peroxide and all types of fluids along with numerous syringes.These little scoops work like a charm. I think you get 6 for $5. It opened my ear and the water came out.I can look up the name when I get home.They look like a qtip only plastic with a scoop on one end and serration on the other.

You might try an antihistamine/decongestant

@Estates

I was just reading about how ear wax can do that with water getting stuck in the ears. Those scoop things sound like they would help. Makes total sense to me.

I just don't understand why the OP would make a trip to the ER then not heed the recommended meds the doctor prescribed? Woman Surprised

Why question the OP's intention to seek answers? Why not just offer an answer to the OP question? That's what I would want if I came here to ask a question.
