I've been experiencing crackling in my ear.  I went to the Urgent Care last night and the doctor said it was fluid in my ear and prescribed a nasal spray and Prednisone.  That seems like overkill to me.   I'm going to check out some "old wives"  solutions.  Anyone have any advice?

Definitely do the nasal spray. If you are unsure about using the Prednisone, chewing gum can help. There is also a breathing exercise where you hold your nose and blow air gently into the ears. It's kind of difficult to explain online. It does work. Fluid in the ears can be very stubborn to get rid of. Another cause of crackling in the ears can be TMJ. I would see your family physician for a confirmation that there is fluid in there.

I bought some eardrops called Swim-EAR. That's made specifically for water removal from the ears. It costs about $6.

You might try a simple decongestant.

I'd check with an ENT specialist . There's so many side effects from Prednisone . They have some prescription  nasal sprays with steroids  for those with nasal polyps .

Per doctors instructions, I take generic Claritin and put a drop of alcohol in my ear.   I have also used the same product @SilleeMee used.

I have suffered for three years.  It began when I took cipro and another antibiotic for diverticulitis.  It even would go into a Geiger counter like spasm and I would collapse.  My first ENT said it was fluid, and put me on nasal spray etc....finally told me not to come back!  The next Ent thought it was from my jaw and wanted me to do prednisone.  I refused.  Through my own research I find stress brings it on and I think the strong antibiotics started it.  I mean it began just a few days from the onset of the antibiotics.  Maybe you have something different.  Mine was extreme.  It has settled down after two years and it occurs on occasion.

Is the water in front of or behind your ear drum?  If it is behind, I would follow the Drs orders.

I don't understand why people go to a doctor if they don't want to follow their orders. I have to believe the doctor is treating you in good faith to the best of his ability.

WHY would you go to the effort and expense of seeking medical treatment of a licensed professional then question their advice?
