Last time I priced it in Walmart it was $5 less than Walgreens, Walgreens is way overpriced.

Home remedy:  let what's left in the glass from red wine (has to be red) dry, then dab the crusty remains onto the cold sore.  Something in the red wine is the "medicine."  I have a friend who swears by this.

@Noel7

I use this, and it works well.  I used to take the RX Valtrex, but it's about the same amount of time.

It has to be the one with "drying action."

It's also helpful to dab witch hazel on the sore a few times a day.

 Another "cure" when you first feel it coming on is to hold an ice cube on it for several minutes.

I have vacyclovir tablets (look like horse pills) that are taken at the 1st 'tingle' of a cold sore. It kills the virus.

My derm orders these for me. I have scars around my mouth from childhood bouts-so painful.

See if your PCP can order these and keep them on hand. I even travel w/these.

I don't get them much either. I just bought a tube at Wal-Mart for $18. I will never be without a tube. If it was $50 I would still buy it because it does work for me. When I feel the itch or even think that's what it is I apply the Abreva & it goes away instead of going full blown yuck.

I know how you feel @Nightowlz

They are so awful, we would pay that.  I guess that's why they raised their price so much Smiley Sad

I've never had a cold sore.  I had a fierce case of chicken pox in childhood - so bad that I couldn't take meals with the family because my face was so covered with the pox.  Years later a doctor told me that the intensity of my chicken pox may have built up a really good resistance to cold sores in me.

Noel, sorry you have to deal with this & hope it's gone quickly!  Keep us posted.
