Cannot be a self-directed blood donor

Well, I went to my primary care physician yesterday. My hemoglobin level is too low for me to pre-surgery donate a couple of pints of blood. In addition, the surgeon says that research shows that directed blood donation has a higher chance of incompatibility than random, so that's not going to happen, either. So, I just hope I won't need a blood transfusion for my second knee like I did my first.
