Rizzo, only thing that will bring up your white count is neulasta which they would have given you. It's all going to take some time for it to go up by itself. They told me to eat chopped liver. Does it help, probably not. Since you white count is so low best to stay away from other people. If you can't then wear a mask. A normal cold can turn nasty for you. Your numbers will go up in a week or so.

My cousin is back in the hospital. He hasn't been admitted to a room yet, and they are still working on him in the emergency room. I called his friend, who took him to the hospital, and she said they are going to do a CAT scan, and it may be a few hours before anything is known. She will stay with him and call me later this evening. He was having pains in his lower stomach earlier today, and was very weak.

Update: My cousin called. He was still in the emergency room. He had the CAT scan, and he said something about a perforation by the tumor in his esophagus. He was waiting to have another test, before they decide what will be done. He was going to ICU afterwards. So I won't know anything until sometime tomorrow morning. His friend will stay with him until he goes to his room. He did say they have given him pain medication.

I'd appreciate your prayers for him. Thank you.

Lyn08: So sorry to hear about your cousin. Hopefully he will respond to the care he will get at the hospital. He was very wise to ask someone to take him to the hospital. Positive thoughts being sent your way.

lost the first post - trying one more time. On the way to chemo today they called to cancel. My white cells were too low and also the platelets were too ow. I have to be home bound for a week until Tuesday, Any idea you ladies might have on what to eat to help the white cells? I am very bummed right now. We were offered the use of a cabin and the family went up and my oldest daughter got engaged there!!!!!!!(Hope I did not mention this already Chem brain is real thing!!!

I know you're bummed out about your white and platelet count, rizzos2000, but I'm happy you found out before your treatment, rather than after and end up in a real scary situation. As I suggested, try to focus on your daughter's upcoming wedding.

I hope you don't mind, but I did some research and found this on the renegade health website...and none of it sounds too wacky.

Natural Ways to Boost WBC

Though there are medications available to increase WBC that may be necessary in severe cases, there are also a number of natural methods you can use. They include the following.

1. Take zinc. You probably already know that zinc is helpful when you first feel the symptoms of a cold coming on. A known immune booster, zinc is linked with the production of white blood cells. Studies have shown that even a mild zinc deficiency can increase risk of infection. The American Cancer Society also notes that some studies have shown zinc levels in blood and/or inside white blood cells were often lower in patients with head and neck cancer or childhood leukemia. Consume more oysters, beef, lamb, wheat germ, and spinach.

2. Take folic acid. The body needs folic acid to make white blood cells. In fact, one of the side effects of excess intake of folic acid is an increase in WBCs. A deficiency of folic acid can also lead to anemia, which is a low level of red blood cells. So if you’re low on either, increasing intake of folic acid may help. Eat more spinach, beans, and citrus fruits.

3. Take selenium. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that selenium can help build up white blood cells. Some studies also indicate that selenium may help prevent some infections. Another study indicated that when the elderly take both zinc and selenium supplements, their immune systems responded better to the flu vaccine than those who took placebo.

4. Eat more yogurt. Some studies have shown that people taking probiotics had stronger immune systems than those who didn’t take them. The probiotics also seemed to boost the WBC. A study conducted by German researchers and published in the Clinical Nutrition recruited nearly 500 healthy adults aged 18 to 67. All were given supplements, but only half received probiotic supplements. Over three months, those given the probiotics suffered fewer colds. In addition, a subgroup of over 100 participants who had their blood count measured showed higher white blood cell counts, indicating a stronger immune system.

5. Add in the garlic. A 2002 animal study found that rats fed garlic showed a significant increase in total white blood cell count. It also seems to promote the ability of white blood cells to fight off infections, and also stimulates other immune cells.

Lyn, we're all sending strength to your cousin, as well as you. He's in the hospital where he'll have round the clock care. I'm sure they'll figure out his stomach pain. Maybe they can start this expensive treatment in the hospital, rather than oral at home. Then the insurance pays much more. All the best in health and peace.

rizzo--- about what F1 posted--check with your onc dr first before taking anything. I drank a super duper green smoothie every morning that had those good things in it and I have to say that my 8 weeks of the first part of chemo were not awful as compared to other horror stories I've heard. I also had a shot the day after chemo so my counts were low but boosted. Can you tell us what chemo you are going thru? And best to stay away from people too--so many nasty bugs out there.

lyn---dang----your poor cousin!!! He has been thru the ringer lately!! But he does need to be where he can get all the care he needs so that is good. Send him our best!!

Jackie---good to know about the mushrooms. I still haven't taken any but have been back on my turmeric and also take a shot of elderberry syrup in my smoothies too. Got the nutribullet pro for Xmas so have been playing with all the recipes for immunity building.

It's still pretty decent weather here. Sunny and in the low 50""s. Rain coming soon and on the Seahawks game on Sunday!! this town is CRAZY with Seahawks fever!!!

F1, no antioxidents during chemo. Every vitamin, and mineral has to be preapproved by the oncologist. However your info is good to know.

Lynn, I'm sorry about your cousin. However, I'm sure he'll get the best of care in the ICU.

Have to see mother in law today. Wish me luck!!

Rizzo, it's so disappointing when you get yourself psyched for chemo and then it gets cancelled. I know, because it happened to me several times and for the same reasons, low WBC and low platelets. Yes please check with your dr before taking anything. Your chemo nurses are full of valuable info, maybe you could ask them, if there's anything you can do. Oh one thing I remember, they told me to be super careful about accidental cutting myself, she even told me not to do dishes! I was more than happy to comply . Take care. Goldie

Thanks ladies. I was definetely thrown a loop yesterday. Having a patty pitty party today! My kids wondered if the 7,000 altitude change from tahoe to our house which is probably more like zero in california had anything to do with it. I will be better mentally later today. Just dont do well with change. Guess i better get used to that. Hugs and good thoughts to all.
