I have Bursitis in both hips now for several years . The only thing that seems to have any relief for me is a round of steroids, but a person can’t always take those.  I sleep on two layers of memory foam on top of my mattress, still not much relief.

Tumeric, naproxen, heat, ice, etc does little.

Anyone else have Bursitis?  What do you do to get relief?

Any help is Appreciated!

just to clarify the difference between arthritis and bursitis

Do I Have Arthritis or Bursitis?

The key difference between arthritis and bursitis is the anatomical structures that they affect.  Arthritis is a chronic condition that irreparably damages bone, cartilage, and joints, whereas bursitis is a temporary condition that involves the painful swelling of bursae for a time.

ArthritisBursitis
Pain is worst in the morning.Pain is worst at night.

Symptoms gradually worsen over months and years.

Symptoms only last for a few weeks.
Primarily results from wear and tear that occurs over a long period of time.Primarily results from sudden periods of overuse or a traumatic event, such as a fall.
Joint damage is irreversible.Bursae inflammation is temporary.
Symptoms require the attention of a medical professional.Symptoms typically improve with conservative, at-home treatments.

I have trochanteric bursitis in my left hip. I had a cortisone shot a couple months ago and it helped a lot. It is painful at times still but I have just learned to deal with it.

The doctor said there isn’t much but the shot other than Aleve or Ibroprofen to help with the pain. There are some types of physical therapy available if needed. Having A-Fib I am not allowed either of the medications. I am on blood thinner also.

I do notice that walking every morning for about 20 minutes to 30 minutes a day really helps. I also see it getting worse if I sit a lot. I have been crocheting Afghan for several people for Christmas so I try every hour to get up and move around.

I can’t sleep on my left side as it is painful.

So far I don’t need another cortisone shot. My doctor said I can have one every 6 months as needed. The shots of cortisone was not painful as many of my friends were telling me it was.

My doctor was quick and easy doing the shot.

Hope my feedback helps.

Good luck finding what works for you.

I have found relief from doing aqua classes.  I'm lucky that I have a therapy pool available and it's usually at 90 degrees.  This allows me to move with little or no pain, while stretching and strengthening my muscles.  Best of luck.

@dex   I might also suggest taking over the counter natural  supplements   for gout... sometimes gouty arthritis mimics bursitis. I take celery seed extract, tart cherry extract everyday.  You can find complete formulas that include these and other ingredients to help with inflamation.

@Wricardos  This may seem simplistic, but Aleve  works for me.  When I have unrelenting pain I start with two capsules and them one capsule 12 hours later.  Sorry you are going through such pain.

Believe me, I do feel your pain. Right hip area only. It comes and goes along with pain from siatica. I had the shot and it didn't really help me. I take tylenol, but that doesn't seem to help. I also bought a 3" foam topper and not sure that really helps either. I don't tale N saids because I'm on blood thinners. I limp along when I'm out and about and sit when I have to. I must say, I'm tired of being in pain all the time. It makes one weary.

If it's continual or keeps recurring, I would get a second opinion.

I've had bursitis twice in my knees and it was caused by repetitive motion. Getting the steroid shots and then changing my behavior to eliminate the repetitive motion ended the problem both times.

If you have received the steroid shots and the problem has not been eliminated, you may need physical therapy or may have a different problem.

And I know you mentioned memory foam mattress toppers - when was the last time you replaced the mattress itself? I've used a memory foam topper to get a few more years out of a mattress, but when the hip and back pain came back, it was a new mattress that solved the problem.
