I was sweeping leaves off my deck and going down the steps when my ankle turned and I went down on pavement. Within an hour my foot was nearly double its size.

I friend took me to Ortho ER and I have 2 broken bones in my foot. By the time we left ER, my foot looked like a thick paddle...a big fat Fred Flinstone foot.

Luckily?, they were bones that surgery can't fix. But now I'm wearing boot that weighs 10 pounds and am on crutches. Just in time for the holidays.

To top it off, it's my right foot so I won't be driving for a while. Doc said I could drive when I could get a shoe on.

Sorry to hear that.  I dislocated a bone in my foot--not broken--5 years ago.  Foot was swollen and "colorful" for several weeks.  Wore a boot for a while.  I found crutches hard to maneuver and used a walker instead.  Now I use a cane more for the sense of security it provides than really needing it.

Good luck.  I don't think feet ever fully recover from any sort of serious injury.

@CalminHeart , Prayers for you.... your quick and painless healing. These small incidents that happen to us as we age are just so quick and devastating.  Sorry this has happened to you.  Heart

@CalminHeart I am so sorry about this. Last December, I was sitting on my couch. i did not realize that my foot was not fully in my sandal. I stood up, my ankle rolled, and crack. I sat on the couch, my foot was horribly bruised and swollen.

I broke my 5th Metatarsal. I wore the boot X 12 weeks. My Podiatrist treated my foot, and she did an x-ray every 2 weeks.

The best thing for that foot is "Rice"- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. I like the Wellow compression socks. They are expensive but the most comfortable compression socks that I have worn, For ice, I used the sleeve type thing that I could pull over my foot. Oh, the cool feels so good on that foot. You can get those on Amazon. I had 2, that way, I could use one and have one ready.

I used Tylenol for pain. My break was on the right foot too. The doctor told me I could not drive but several weeks in, I drove short distances. Only essentials. You cannot drive in the boot.

I could not use crutches, I do have a knee scooter but found that hard to use too. I spent most of the time on the couch. You can enjoy movies and Christmas shows.

I was able to take my boot off at night. Wear a sock under that boot or it will be scratchy on your leg.

Well, good luck, I am sorry you had that fall. Things will be better.

@CalminHeart

So sorry! I'm glad that you didn't break any more bones. Could have been a lot worse. Do you have osteoporosis? Broken foot bones could be a sign to get checked.

@CalminHeart

Hi Fred those boots are a nuisance. Same issue here when I had to wear one.  Good luck on your recovery.

I fell about 3 weeks ago and fractured the long bone on the side of my foot..I'm never in a rush to see Dr.s...thought it was a sprain.At my regular Dr. appt. they sent me for an x-ray..or I would not have known..They just wrapped it in an Ace bandage..I wouldn't take a boot..afraid I would fall again with that clunky thing.

Feel better!
