Birkenstock and the diabetic foot? Dryness

I love my Birkenstocks but since I've been diagnosed type 2 my feet and the foot bed no longer get along. That suede like covering on the insole works like razor blades on my poor feet. Is there anything I can get to soften the footbed? I can't put enough lotion on my feet to help and I really love my latest pair.
