Back home after having a laminectomy with discectomy at L5/S1 yesterday. Thank you to everyone who gave me such great advice in my previous thread about what to do while in or what to take with me to the hospital. The surgery lasted two hours, and I convinced the doc to let me go home yesterday evening. I have not yet taken a pain pill, but we shall see how that goes. The drugs and anesthesia at the hospital made me nauseous, and I stayed that way during the ride on the gurney from recovery, the wheel chair ride on the way out, and the hour long car drive home because any movement in a vehicle made me want to puke. I was fine if I moved on my own. My digestive tract is still not happy today though. Any time I eat dairy or more than small servings, I get nauseous again. The surgery itself must have gone well. My leg and foot are still numb, but they say that is normal and that it will take time for the nerve to heal. I do not remember being given the general anesthesia or anything unpleasant at all, so for anyone scared of this part of getting surgery...don't be. I was terrified, and for nothing. The last thing I remember is the anesthesia nurse saying she was going to add something for nausea ahead of time to my IV. I would swear she fibbed to me and gave me the anesthesia right then in the pre-op area! My throat is sore, and I am hoarse from the breathing tube. No catheter was used for such a short surgery (yay). That is all I can think of right now. If anyone has any questions about any other parts of the hospital routine, let me know. I will be happy to try and help. And yes, you really do not want to take any entertainment to the hospital for these short surgeries, because you will NOT use it. There is no time. Thanks again everyone!
