Arthritis in my pixie

The last joint close to my nail hurts so badly. It is swollen and red. Some days better, some worse. Don't know if I should massage it, ice it, or put warm on it. Started about 6 months ago. The doctor I showed it to, just rolled his eyes and showed me his hands. Is this typical beginnings of arthritis? It hurts so badly. Now my pointer finger is starting the same thing.
