Arthritic Fingers — Cyst on Finger Joint

Anyone have experience with treatment for these fluid-filled growths?  I am waiting for an appointment with a hand specialist but would like to hear other people's experience with this surprisingly painful and unattractive condition.

Re: Arthritic Fingers — Cyst on Finger Joint

Yes, I had a cyst on my knuckle/joint of my thumb.  My doctor didn't think draining it would work and suggested I see a hand specialist, just as you are about to do.  He recommended surgery.  I had a bone spur as well.

Anyway, the specialist did tell me that it would be painful after the surgery and he was right.  I never thought one little thumb could hurt so bad.  He gave me percocet (I think) but it made me sick so I just dealt with the pain.  It only lasted one day.  I had the surgery on a Friday and was back at work on Monday with my thumb in a bandage and splint and felt absolutely fine.

It's been about twleve or so years so I don't remember how long the bandage and splint stayed on, but my thumb has been fine every since and the cyst did not return.

Good luck to you!

Thank you, @Citrine1.  It's on the first joint of my right index finger, a finger that I use a great dealSmiley Sad

Every so often it spontaneously drains but then fills up again.

Re: Arthritic Fingers — Cyst on Finger Joint

Sorry I have no experience with addressing the problem but wanted to say I certainly have it! Mine are primarily in my pointer finger on both hands and have been progressively getting bigger for years. There was a time they did not bother me much but now they are getting quite painful. It's difficult for me to press down the squirt mechanism on bottles of lotion,  facial cleanser, etc. Oh, and they're ugly as all get out, too!!!

I wish you luck with your appointment and please let us know what you find out. I certainly sympathize.

Yes--I had this on my right hand, middle finger.  I had it for two years and eventually it went away.  When I got the same on my left hand, I punctured it--thought no way am I going to live with this again for 2 years!

Went to the hand doctor so they could tell me what causes this and they gave me an earful about doing my own surgery.  They put antibiotic on and a bandage and it was gone completely in a couple days.

I had difficulty with a can of Pam this morning and it was depressing to have tenderness/pain with using a fork to cut into fried eggs. 😕

I do know not to jab it with a needle, @Seannie.  Ouch and too much risk of an infection.  I went to urgent care recently because it became infected.

Re: Arthritic Fingers — Cyst on Finger Joint

Just wanted to add that the bumps on my index fingers are from osteoarthritis and are called Heberden’s nodes. They are boney, hard, large nodules. There's no fluid, they do not drain, they do not bust, and there's no way I could do anything on my own to get rid of them. I believe surgery is the only option.

Just wanted to say we may be talking about different problems here.
