Anyone use aromatherapy oils?

I just bought my first bottle of oil called "breathe". It is wonderful. My DH doesn't snore and I sleep really good at night.

What is the best way to put the oil in the air? Best diffuser? We are using the oil on the dry pad in one of those dry Vicks vaporizers. It works ok but doesn't last all night.

Any suggestions of the best brand of oils?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone use aromatherapy oils?

I am just starting on my journey with essential oils after learning that Vicks now uses turpentine in some of their products.

I bought a bottle of eucalyptus oil and I'm using it as you do, on the dry pad in the Vicks night dispenser. It doesn't last an entire 8 hours but if I need more treatment I pour about a Tbsp. in the bathroom sink, run some hot water while I soak in the tub or put the towel over my head and breathe deep! So far, it's been heaven for my sinuses!!

I've been going to my local herbalist and I bought my first book on oils so I'm learning. They are quite knowledgeable. If you don't have one locally, try a health food store for advice. They do run a small cool mist vaporizer type of device in their store with oil blends.

There are a couple of threads in Beauty on essential oils if you want to check there, too.

I'm in a bitty town, so there is not a herbalist or a health food store. I love the Vicks dry pads, but were to expensive to use a new one every night. I didn't know they were dangerous. I was just looking for an alternative. I have allergies and clogged sinuses most of the time. Dh snores and we were finding that the Vicks worked great for both of us. I started searching and found the aromatherapy oils and have been using them. I'm impressed. I have been sleeping so much better.

I was searching for a diffuser (uses water) on Amazon that will work all night and not just for 4 hours. I remembered tonight that I think I have a diffuser bought years ago from QVC. I just have to find it! I don't remember what I did with it.

I really appreciate your post. I will check the beauty thread. Thanks!

Re: Anyone use aromatherapy oils?

When those electric diffusers came out in the late 90s, I got all excited and purchased one. I had a number different oils. You'd pick one and place maybe 2-3 drops on a tiny fibrous pad, which was then inserted into the small electric diffuser and turned on. LOVED it - until my female Burmese cat started having horrible coughing spells (cats don't cough as a rule). I had to rush her to the vet's and sure enough, my guess was correct, she was allergic to the oils and had developed asthma. Won't go into the treatment I had to administer, but just want you and all to know that if you're bringing oils (concentrated scent) into your home, just keep an eye on your fur babies.

My massage therapist uses doTerra oils in one of their diffusers. It's a small-ish rectangle. She says it's easy to keep clean. No idea on pricing for this line.

Re: Anyone use aromatherapy oils?

Around Christmas, I had a cold/cough. I used the Perrpermint oil for coughing. It stopped the cough instantly. I just dabbed a tiny bit in my nose. I stopped coughing & also slept better. However, the Lavender is recommended for relaxing/sleep. I think I am somewaht allergic to it. I had tried a lavender spray for linens awhile back & now the oil giving me the same reaction. It does something to my breathing causing me to almost loose my voice. It is hard to explain, But I don't use the Lavender anymore, also got the same reaction from Cedar Wood.

Interesting, I met a woman in line at WW last night who was talking to me about essential oils. She handed me a business card, she sells for DoTerra. They seem expensive but I was reading about the properties of the individual oils on the DoTerra website and want to learn more on my own.

Re: Anyone use aromatherapy oils?

Mima, I did post on that thread in Beauty.

I had mentioned that if you have a health food store in your area, it is nice if you can go in and test the oils in person by smelling them, as they are in their most concentrated form this way, and they tend to be rather "earthy" or herbal-smelling in my opinion, and it takes getting used to them in this way.

I think that they do smell beautiful, but I think that we tend to be used to them when they are more diluted in perfumed form and are made in the form of lotions, perfumes, bubble baths, etc.

I like using them in the form of pre-made rollerballs. They are pretty inexpensive in this form, and you can find them in different mixtures, for different uses this way, too. They are sold this way online by many different retailers, too.
